White Noise
Writer - theatre director Noah Baumbach is back withWhite Noise , an version of the 1985 novel of the same name by Don DeLillo . Starring Adam Driver , Greta Gerwig , and Don Cheadle , the film is a satire that has eminent goals but which never soars above its half - formed approximation and messy execution . Bogged down by uneven plotting and genre change , White Noiseloses itself in the chaos of what it ’s test to say and fail to become fully realized or logical .

White Noiseis inconsistent and tonally uneven , with character that seem more like caricatures than fully drawn people . It ’s hard to make sensation of this mussy , unnecessarily convolute film where the credits chronological sequence is the best part — and what the residuum of the film should have emulated more . There is little to no spirit involved , and there is a gulf felt between the audience and the write up . This insularism is most obvious in the 2d half of the film , which is wildly unlike from the first half . It feels more like one is watching two very disparate account — they both have a lot of potential , but they are endlessly frustrating and tedious to sit through . Driver and Gerwig are solid , and they seem to be sustain a fun sentence onscreen , but the material just is n’t there for them . Don Cheadle , who impersonate Jack ’s confrere Murray Siskind , gets very little to run with , but he ’s still good despite a limited role .
Often , White Noiseis aimless . Yes , the themes of the celluloid are not exactly insidious , especially in the first half , where everyone is invariably and loudly distracted by what is happening around them to sharpen on what really matters . The film and the book it ’s ground on amplifies the fixation , consumptions , and fear that plague human beings , butthe flick ’s satiredoesn’t deliver much depth or humour when examining its topic matter . Everything just sort of happen and its complexity are lose in the cacophony of the film ’s own noise and chaos , the latter of which only works in the immediate aftermath of the hand truck ’s collision with the train .
It ’s a shame , too , because Baumbach ’s film can be once in a while exciting and happily weird . Its stress on the dishonesty that festers in family relationship and how people continue to distract themselves , even when faced with the possibility of the world ’s deterioration , is compelling , to be sure . But the points the film is trying to make have been explored in other films , and to slap-up effect . A pic can only go so far in its themes if it ’s unwilling to amply explore them beyond the open . To that end , White Noiseseems like it has a caboodle to say , admit a throughline about existential dread , but it ’s all lose amidst shallowness and its own beguilement , which weaken the film ’s overarching themes . In that elbow room , it becomes what it is trying to analyze , and a shadow of what it could have been .
