We Broke Up

Directed by Jeff Rosenberg from a screenplay by him and Laura Jacqmin , We Broke Upfollows a longtime dyad as they navigate leaving each other . The picture , which is meant to be a drollery , does n’t render much in the means of humor and offers even less eccentric developing . While there ’s an attempt to fetch a message about relationship , We Broke Upis more focused on awkward shenanigans than in exploring its characters .

Lori ( The Boys’Aya Cash ) and Doug ( The Good Place’sWilliam Jackson Harper ) have been together for a decade and they ’re felicitous together — or so they think . We Broke Upcertainly has its endearing moments and Harper and Cash are wonderful in their function . But the film is too focused on reach it extremely awkward for Lori and Doug , both of whom would rather skirt around their break - up than discuss it or its implications on their lives . They ’re both on dissimilar pageboy and that ’s naturalistic , but this is a couple who have been together for ten eld and it ’s hard to imagine they ’ve never spoken about their futurity together . Lori is comfortable where they are now — she enjoys sharing a cozy flat with Doug and having stability , affection , and love . Doug , however , want more than what they have now — marriage , Kid , a single house .

Considering their primary point in time of rivalry is n’t explore until the last deed ( and even then it ’s scarcely touch upon ) , the film falls myopic on what could have been a compelling arc . The difference in the couple ’s wants and pauperism is an intriguing one , but it ’s wield with little depth , which leaves a lot to be want .   Rosenberg and Jacqmin ’s decision to compare and contrast Lori and Doug ’s farseeing - terminus , shin kinship with that of Bea and Jayson ’s new , promising one is an odd one , chiefly because it consider aside focus from Lori and Doug ’s issue . The interview barely get to sleep together them as individuals or as a twosome before they ’re throw into the nuptials festivities .

The eternal sleep ofWe discover Uponly superficially explore the breach between the main character , with their relationship woes coming in 2nd to the comedic spectacle of the weekend , most of which is cringe - desirable instead of humorous . The estimate was perhaps to show how , even when a couple has been together for a recollective time , thing are not always what they seem . It ’s a fantastic concept to undertake , but one the film mishandles entirely because it defy to engage with the subject in any meaningful way . harpist and Cash , who do a great task depict the tautness between their fiber , wind up doing most of the excited heavy lifting , with their body lyric and facial construction carry what the screenplay does n’t with its overall lack of thoughtful talks and slender plot .

There ’s very little emotional investment all around , which is a disgrace because the story ’s setup and the dynamic between Lori and Doug has so much voltage . What starts off as an interesting premise quickly veers off into passably sappy and ridiculous soil , withWe Broke Upside - stepping the elephant in the room rather than work to address it . To do so would have certainly help to lift the material and the pic struggles to balance the heart with the humor , which is a hurt to the tale .
