The visual effects are impressive and the crew does a technically competent job. However, the heart and warmth we have come to expect from Spielberg’s films are missing. Has Spielberg already forgotten why he became one of Hollywood’s most successful directors?
Did n’t I already see this in 1996 , and was n’t it calledIndependence Day ? ( I ’m only half - joking . ) Actually , this movie is better than the said schlockfest , but to my surprise , it was n’t allthatmuch better . I have n’t read the Good Book by H.G. Wells , on which this moving picture and its previous incarnations were establish , but after construe this latest remake , I really want to interpret the book . I surmise I ’ll enjoy it more than I enjoyed this picture .
Before I really delve into the review , I want to bemoan the loss of the old Steven Spielberg , the one who gave us such classic asThe Goonies , theIndiana Jonesseries and , of course , E.T.I commend watchingA.I.a few years ago and expressing surprisal at how bad it was . I still sense that elbow room , but despite that , what really diffuse throughoutA.I.is a high dose of sentimentality , and yes , even some fondness at time . But since then , Spielberg movies have been almost wholly innocent of affectionateness . I thoughtMinority Reportwas a nice movie , but it had almost no warmth at all . EvenSchindler ’s Listhad some heat to it at time , butWar of the Worldsis almost all devoid of the heart and warmth we have amount to expect from Spielberg ’s movies . Ray immediately mellow - tails it back home , just scantily avoiding the laser beams on several occasions . He quickly has his kids take whatever they can , and since Ray knows where a operate fomite can be found ( of course of action ) , they head for Boston to find Mary Ann and Tim .
