Lots of gunshot and gadgetry in use ( old weapons do n’t cut it any longer , do n’t you know ) as Selene meander through an old sewer organisation chasing baddies . At one point we see ( and Selene hears ) a clump of cat watching two werewolves battling it out . turn out that it ’s kind of a wolfman " Fight Club " , which does not impress their loss leader once he arrives on scene .
Selene come back to the vampire mansion , which once inside reminded me of a scene fromEyes Wide Shutwith people sit and lie around decadently . She surmise that the werewolves ( who are referred to throughout the film as " Lycans " , which I presuppose sounds more hip ) were after a human : a med scholarly person key out Michael Corvin ( played by Scott Speedman ) for reasons unknown . The current drawing card of the lamia ( make that leader of the " Coven " … more hipness ) , does n’t trust a word of what she say . member of the coven think she ’s infatuate with Michael , but of course it turn out that he is a central divisor in the long - running war .
Underworldstarts out as an MTV / Technopunk kind of motion-picture show but does at some point advance ( somewhat ) above that . It ’s certainly noBlade , but except for some boring stretches it did handle to nurse . unluckily this was in production whenThe Matrixwas the grownup thing , and it draws from that film heavily as far as visuals : Form - fitting black leather and long coat are everywhere , lot of grillwork in the stunt , and even one picture redolent of Neo waking up in his gooey pod in the Matrix .
Towards the oddment the action turn pretty non - stop , with the exception of the celluloid intermittently cutting to Michael welt to a table essay to get free . About the only other actor that impressed me wasKevin Greviouxin the role of Raze , who was essentially an enforcer / bouncer kind of throwaway character , but really stand out whenever he was onscreen . Kevin was also one of the guys who came up with the story , and I was stunned to hear that his unbelievably rich , echo chamber - comparable voice wasnotcomputer enhance !
Overall , just call it a guilty pleasure that might go down easier with a brace of beers under your knock .
