Leon capture the feel of New York , the constant motion of people going from one place to another , commonly in a rushing . Faces blur as Alina gets lost among them , with no clear path and no reason given as to why she ’s suddenly see a consummate memory loss regarding her personal identity . While what Alina get up to is intriguing , especially as the film opens up about her intuitive feeling and the teens she consultation get plainspoken about theirs , Italian Studiesgets beguile up in conveying the panic , terrible , uncertain emotion Alina confront without ever actually establish toward anything substantial .
To that end , the motion picture is as aimless and shinny to find its identity as Alina . After all , there is only so much that can be gleaned from following Kirby ’s character around the city . Alina is dazed and confuse , but is mostly unsure about who she is , an element of the plastic film that could be quite fascinating if it had been research further . Could she have carved out a new identity operator for herself and started fresh ? Would all of her life history ’s stresses fall away if she never regain her memory ? There was a pile of potential to delve deeper , but Leon chooses to remain at surface level .
Italian Studiesbrings up a blare of noise , of lives being lived , and there is something certainly disconcerting about Alina being disconnected from hers . Unfortunately , the flick never rises above its initial assumption and there is no explanation as to why she suddenly ca n’t remember anything about her sprightliness . And although Kirby yield an excellent carrying into action , portraying Alina with the right amount of misty muddiness , vacuous unknowingness , and snippy pushback , the character evolution is in the end lack because of the thin handwriting . There is also the return of Alina ’s relationship with Simon , which is sweet at first before becoming deeply uncomfortable .
Leon imbue the movie with an uncertain sense of apprehension , but he does n’t lead the report or its protagonist anywhere worthwhile . It ’s as though the narrative was design specifically to capture the tactual sensation of being lost in the city and what that might do to someone , but there ’s very minuscule exploration of Alina ’s interiority for it to be satisfying . Alina wanders , panoptic - eyed and directionless in a film that as lacks a horse sense of purpose .
