The Tourist

Screen Rant ’s Vic Holtreman reviewsThe Tourist

Usually , it ’s a Sci - Fi or superhero celluloid that get along from time to fourth dimension which swear primarily on its " smell " above everything else - one does n’t usually expect a dramatic play , love affair or semi - action / adventure story to rely on its visual view to run it . The Touristdoes just that , whether that was director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck ’s intention or not .

Of of course there are bad things than a photographic film which stars Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp relying on its appearance .

The Tourist Movie Poster

We set out in the beautiful metropolis of Paris , with the most beautiful Angelina Jolie ( it ’s the eye I tell apart ya ) . She is so aristocratic here that she fairly glides across the screen - and she is under large surveillance by the Parisian police . Under the inadvertence of Scotland Yard ( with Paul Bettany in boot of the caseful ) , they are hop she will extend them to her lover , who is postulate in some sort of major , heroic financial crime .

As the film begin , it seems like we might be in for a adequate ride - a game of cat and mouse between her , the unobserved buff and the police force . She receive a preeminence at a cafe with instructions on what to do and where to go so as to evade those who are espouse her - and it does n’t take long for the advice to demonstrate accurate . The architectural plan as dictated to her , is to line up someone of similar build to him so as to have the potency believe it IS him . They do n’t know what he look like because he ’s stolen over $ 2 billion and the assumption is that he ’s had extensive reconstructive surgery so as to hide from the police - and the British mob honcho from whom he slip the money .

As a affair of course of instruction he terminate up in impairment ’s elbow room - being chase by both the Italian police ( they ’re now in Venice ) , the mob mobster ’s thugs and Scotland Yard . trust me when I tell you that in this movie , it is NOT as exciting as it sounds .

Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp in ‘The Tourist’ review

The Touristjust kind of plod along from one venue / panorama to the next , seeming almost random . There are unexciting chase vista and a bit of romance between Jolie and Depp that feels very one - way … it ’s clear why Depp ’s character would fall for Jolie ’s , but why she would be interested in a guy like him never rings true .

If you ’re go to see this film , you really , really need to be a fan of both of these actors because it ’s very much focused on them . Jolie , as stated antecedently , is quite gorgeous in the film - but it seems like you ’re not give up to figure that out for yourself , as there are multiple scenes of her walking down the street , entering rooms , get in at a testicle , etc . where the human race part like the Red Sea , and they turn in unison to gaze at her . As if to " facilitate " us to understand that she is utterly and whole captivating in case we poor motion-picture show viewers do n’t get that already .

One thing I did like about the film is that it feel like it was sample for that late fifties , early sixties romanticism / thriller vibe . It had the aspect of those and it even felt like a atavist to those by being what I would consider a mild PG-13 ( well , other than one fairly brutal strangling ) . There were also some big actors on hand like Steven Berkoff , ( an underutilized ) Rufus Sewell and Paul Bettany . I know some the great unwashed are concerned in seeing this as much for Bettany as the two lead - but what I found risible was that the few scene Timothy Dalton seem in as Bettany ’s boss were entirely stolen by Dalton despite very little dialog or time on projection screen .

One matter that I believe could have assist this film " pop " would be a advantageously melodic score . It was very conventional and generic and did n’t add much needed soul nor zip to the moving-picture show . Speaking of the score ( and films with those that excel ) , whatThe Touristreminded me of was a much water - down variation ofThe Thomas Crowne Affair , with the genders reversed .

I do n’t guess it was as awful as many are making it out to be - it was certainly pretty to look at , but in the end , utterly forgettable .
