The Spirit
Screen Rant reviewsThe Spirit
Wow .
That ’s the first Book that comes to mind as I think aboutThe Spirit . It ’s an good example of a pic that just pass on me plain flummox . It ’s so awful that I ’m completely in the dark as to how a movie like this can ever actually get fund , produce and make it into movie theaters .
The very first line of dialog mouth in the film was utterly cheesy - and that pose the tone for the entire movie . I was n’t certain what I was in for … I’d seen the footageandthetrailersand it ALL seem horribly unsound , but I think that there might be something else to the picture show that either was n’t being conveyed in the footage we ’d seen , or that would make what we HAD seen somehow " work . "
As Alex Trebek would say onJeopardy : " Sorry , no . "
InThe Spirit , former police force officer Denny Colt ( Gabriel Macht ) ( who was gun down in the line of products of tariff ) is now a masked crime fighter in Central City . He ’s animated because he was a ginzo pig for a scientist ’s experimentation on immortality .
He does n’t remember how or why he ’s total back from the dead , and has n’t really cared until his arch - curse " The Octopus " ( Samuel L. Jackson ) tells him that they have more in common than The Spirit thinks . One of the odder thing in the picture show ( which was never explicate ) is his need to be tend to by Dr. Ellen Dolan ( Sarah Paulson ) to help him recover - even though he supposedly has Wolverine - like healing powers .
The Spirit works closely with the police and in exceptional with the Commisioner ( Dan Lauria ) , who bump to be Ellen ’s beginner . He thinks the mask one is lose it due to his compulsion with the Octopus , plus he ’s not happy with the fact that the Spirit seems to both put out and be extremely susceptible to pheromones - falling in love with every cleaning woman he meets . Ellen true pine for the Spirit and even though he romances other women right in front of her , she still ca n’t help herself .
The Octopus is wait for the key to immortality , and even though he ’s most of the way there , he needs to drink some of " Heracles blood line " to seal the deal . He has a bunch of cloned confederate all played by Louis Lombardi who make the " Otis " character in the Superman movies look brilliant by comparison . They wear MT - shirt each with a dissimilar saying on them - the first three guy have either " Pathos , " " Egos " or " Logos " on their shirt . Later on as more copies appear they have other single , and progressivly stupider , words on them .
Denny Colt is a superhero with ghostlike powers, who goes by the moniker “The Spirit.” Using his powers, he defends the city from The Octopus and Sand Saref, who are fighting against each other in a race to find the immortality-granting Blood of Heracles.
See but here ’s the problem : " Camp " is really supposed to befunny .
And what go on when camp fails to be odd ? You ’re just left with " dazed . "
There is so much untimely with this moving-picture show that I ca n’t take the time to document it all . There ’s cringe inducing dialog ( " I had you tick like egg . " ) , bizarre ocular choices ( most of the time The Spirit ’s stoolpigeon glowed blank ) , and idiotic story points ( Ellen tends to ego - healing Spirit while a police officer is critically wound by multiple gunshot wounds ) . Oh , I could go on - a flashback aspect where the Spirit is talk to a cat ( and there were a passel of cats in the moving picture … not sure what the heck THAT was all about ) , Eva Mendes as San Serif making a photocopy of her " perfect ass , " etc . , etc .
The ONE scene in the movie that actually made me laugh was when the Spirit was link up up in a chair and the Octopus was monologing ( you be intimate , explain his vicious design right before the good bozo gets loose and thwarts the evil plan ) and the Spirit asks:“Is there a point to all this ? I ’m getting world-weary . “It echo my thoughts all .
I ’m truly get that both the studio and the actors need in this read this hand and STILL went on to finance / become involved with the pic . Even on composition this MUST have looked utterly laughable . If they thought that writer / director Frank Miller ( yes , he wrote AND directed this wagon train wreck ) would be able-bodied to make this work somehow they were sorely false . This is a pure exercise of that Hollywood nearsightedness in which you could have dozens ( if not hundreds ) of people process on a plastic film , watch dailies - and for some bizarre reason no one can tell it ’s a steaming pile .
The only understanding I ’m giving this even half a champion is out of obligingness to Sarah Paulson , who was probably one of the unspoilt things in the film ( and that ’s not say much ) and to Gabriel Macht , who I just pity for having the starring role in this photographic film . Hopefully it does n’t kill his career - he seems like he ’s a comme il faut actor . As to Samuel L. Jackson - Good Lord , man … do n’t you have enough money ? Ca n’t you be a bit more discerning in what roles you peck ? somewhat shortly no one will take you earnestly as an actor .
Some people may say this is " fun " … me ? I ’d use the word " painful . " AvoidThe Spiritat all costs .
It ’s not even worthy of the " so bad it ’s funny " badge - it ’s just plain unspeakable .
Denny Colt is a superhero with ghostlike power , who goes by the nickname " The Spirit . " Using his powers , he defends the city from The Octopus and Sand Saref , who are fighting against each other in a subspecies to find the immortality - granting parentage of Heracles .
