The Seven Faces of Jane
Seven directors number together to tell one cleaning woman ’s write up , an data-based tale of a woman driving around Los Angeles . Each sketch was directed in hugger-mugger , with each director unaware of what would come before or after their film segment . The Seven Faces of Janeis therefore an ambitious undertaking , but it is n’t worth taking on as an audience member .
Gillian Jacobs starsand directs inThe Seven Faces of Jane . The story follows the titular Jane as she drop off her daughter at a sleep - away camp and then drive off into what is essentially a mini odyssey , where she live many obstacles and connections . Contributing to this creative endeavor , known as Exquisite Corpse , are directors Julian Acosta , Xan Cassavetes , Gia Coppola , Ryan Heffington , Boma Iluma , Ken Jeong , Alex Takacs , and of course , Jacobs herself , who directed the opening and closing segment of the film .

Each segment is made with the film director ’s voice being the essential ingredient , facilitating state of affairs where Jane is the subject that help get their message across . Some section are more meaningful than others , but each one speaks to something the directors need the interview to engage with . Jacobs is game for all of it . While her operation is jarring at time , Jacobs ' dedication to the roleis feel throughout . She is undoubtedly an actress that lend herself to many genre and type of storytelling , but she is n’t entirely employ in the best fashion here .
The pic run with a few canonic dry land rules that are inform by the initial premise , but the director have full discretion over where their section goes . And while the experiment is fun and interesting , it is hardly suitable of public consumption . For a cinema that is somewhat helmed by legacy directors , one would mean the quality of their pic would rank higher than the medium student film . The disjointed story , the deficiency of social structure , and a miscast ( this persuasion manifests in two segment ) makeThe Seven Faces of Janea conceptual piece of workplace rather than a terminated one . For film buffs who delight the challenge and the audaciousness of data-based study , this is pleasurable — or , at the very least , inspiring .
This is a projection where the summation of the parts is greater than the whole . Some segment guarantee their own light moving-picture show , and perhaps their own feature . The directors have talent ; their acquisition are never put into interrogative sentence . But with little structure , that talent just falls flat . The themes are evident in committal to writing and through Jacobs ' execution , but the inconsistency of the vignette squashes any meaningful progression . The jarring nature of this project is most prevalent in the more socially witting segment by Boma Iluma and Julian Acosta , which are smashing pitches for their own lineament narratives . But their story have less to do with Jane and her narrative and more with how she functions in someone else ’s write up . The film ’s core is the tarradiddle of a woman ’s experiential crisis that gets lost in such segment . If there had been a thematic throughline that served as a ground element for each vignette , the experimentation would have been a success .
Gillian Jacobs in The Seven Faces of Jane
The story of a woman set about to understand who she is outdoors of being someone ’s mother is an interesting concept . Aside from the lack of anatomical structure , however , the film fails to really push the gasbag Gia Coppola ’s section — that features two Janes — sets up . There is an expected value that audience will get weirder and unknown vignette as the motion picture goes on , yet Coppola ’s segment brings that expectation to a screeching stay . There is something worthwhile in there somewhere , something that has Jacobs truly exploring her wide range and incredible chameleon - like talent as an actress , but the outcome is simply too tongue-tied to bear . Experiments are fun , but they are even better when something is ascertain from the failures and perfected in the next effort . The Seven Faces Of Janeis an experimentation that just does not extradite the correct results .
