The Ruins

WhileThe Ruinshas virtually no plot, the characters aren’t cardboard cutouts and if you’re looking for a cringe-inducing horror movie you may actually enjoy it.

Yes , folk , you register that rating correctly : The Ruinsis best than10,000 B.C.

No , it wasn’tgreat , but it was n’t terrible for this sorting of motion-picture show . The save grace here is a combination of the actors ' carrying into action and the direction they were given by author / conductor of the cinema Scott Smith .

I ’m not saying they were Oscar - worthy , but I in reality find like they were hoi polloi and not just stereotyped cannon fodder . By the time the uncollectible stuff starts happening you may at least experience some form of connexion to them , as opposed to say , the disposable characters inAliens vs piranha : Requiem .

The Ruins (2008) - Poster

game ? One myopic conviction : A mathematical group of untried , cornered American tourer seek to survive human - eating plants .

The film open with a untested cleaning woman bow in what looks like a cave , weep and try out repeatedly to get a connection on her cell phone . We assume ( correctly ) that she is not long for this domain . At first this really bugged me because I thought " Great , another one of those start with the cease picture show , " but I get over it as the movie start on . From there we get your standard babes in bikinis scene ( nothing wrong with that in a repugnance flick as far as I ’m concerned ) where we cope with the main characters : Jeff ( Jonathan Tucker ) , Eric ( Shawn Ashmore ) , Amy ( Jena Malone ) , and Stacy ( Laura Ramsey ) .

Jeff ( who looks distractingly like a young Christian Bale ) is the responsible one in the group and his lady friend is Amy . Amy deserve special mention because while in the celluloid she sometimes wears glasses , she is without a doubt the stupidest glasses - wearing female case in the history of pic . Why is this a sticking power point for me ? Because invariably , in film they always put glasses on attractive women to connote tidings . More on that later .

The Ruins movie review

Eric , as mentioned above , is played by Shawn Ashmore - he was the only one in the mold I recognize because he play Jimmy Olsen in the > SmallvilleTV series ( sorry , Shawn is a twin pal to Eric , andthat’stheSmallvilleguy ) Iceman in theX - Menmovies . He count quite a number older here than he does on the show . His lady friend is Stacey , the need big - breast blonde .

They fulfill the gallant Mathias ( played by Joe Anderson ) , a German tourist who is guide out the next morning to find his brother , who went to an off - the - map archaeological dig with some other hottie ( who presumptively wears glasses too , I suppose ) . Our gang has been doing nothing but hanging by the puddle and drinking margaritas for their full vacation so Jeff talk them into go with Mathias .

The next morning they head out for the site and after hike for a morsel they find a trail that has been advisedly hidden . The women express concern and the guys of course of action , do not . They maneuver on through and this is where the bother begin .

The Ruins movie cast

The Ruins is a horror film directed by Carter Smith, centering on a group of friends who encounter terrifying forces at an ancient archaeological dig in Mexico. As they attempt to escape, they realize the ruins harbor a sinister presence. The film stars Jonathan Tucker, Jena Malone, and Laura Ramsey, and is based on the novel by Scott Smith.

A large local fellow daddy out of the jungle scream at them in some non - hispanic language and things get ugly really , really tight . They ca n’t communicate so it ’s unmanageable to settle what ’s last on . He ’s packing a revolver and pointing it wildly in their direction and soon a couple of guys with prow and arrows make it to connect him . Now let ’s get to the " dazed chick with glasses " part of things - When the first guy shows up , although he ’s waving a gun and screaming at them , Amy the recreational lensman think it ’s a not bad opportunity to snap a photo of one of the local residents . Her story - headed young man Jeff tell her to lay off . Shortly after the extra arrow - wielding guys arrive and they all seem to actually be getting somewhere with the dialog , she decides to ( yup , you guessed it ) take another exposure despite the delicate spot .

Much havoc and dying follows direct afterwards .

They are forced up onto a Mayan Pyramids of Egypt , and for some reason the locals do n’t follow them . presently an encampment springs up around the Pyramids of Egypt and it ’s light that our young friends are n’t going anywhere any time soon .

The characters looking scared in The Ruins

When they attain the top they discover a set up with a pulley and rope and it ’s obvious that Mathias ' comrade and/or archaeological babe used it to decend into the pyramid . They require someone to go down there because he hears his pal ’s cell phone ring and none them have one that has receipt there .

Although thing have already start out blend downhill at the base of the Great Pyramid , of track they only get worse .

So what ’s ripe ? Like I said , although Amy annoyed the support pit out of me with her uber - naive way , I actually thought the characters had at least some depth for a movie of this sorting . They also did a decent problem of slowly inaugurate the plants as a menace , and the moving-picture show actually had a couple of surprise that I did n’t see coming . The only had a couple of " jump picture , " which I really think are a inexpensive way to scare the audience . Also the scenes that involved gore werereallywell done . I literally cringed and groaned in my buns at a span of them . I also like the obtuse partitioning and recognition of the situation .

What ’s not salutary ? There was more than one stint where I was frankly , bored and just waiting for the next " thing " to happen . The lack of more of a game , although I imagine the hackneyed one that was there was sufficient for the aim of the motion-picture show . And of grade , the stupidity of the Amy character , not just in the above shot but throughout the ordeal .

Overall I have to say that this was much sound than I ask , however that does n’t mean it ’s some diamond in the rough , either . If you ’re into horror movies it ’s worth a facial expression , but if extremely graphic gore grow you off , it ’s not for you .
