Sadly, this superfluous sequel follows the time-honored Hollywood tradition of being vastly inferior to its predecessor. It has a few genuine scares, but for the most part it’s kind of boring.
I wanted to like this movie . I really did , but deplorably , the averageness make in the manner . And to be honest , it was n’t terrible ; it was just okay . I need it to be keen , likeThe Ringwas great . I actually had my hopes up , mainly because Hideo Nakata , who directed theRinguseries on which this enfranchisement was based , directed this one . I require to be scared , butThe RingandThe Grudgewere much scarier than this movie .
Before I go any further , I need to clarify that to properly retrospect this film , I have to unveil some plot points from this movie ’s predecessor , The Ring . So if you have n’t already seenThe Ring , you should watch that first before you read this review . ( It ’s a better film anyway ; rely me . ) I wo n’t disclose any crucial plot of land points fromThe Ring Twoin this review , though . That policy has n’t change .
Before I even get wind this movie , the biggest question in my mind was whether a continuation toThe Ringwas truly necessary . It was genuinely scarey , and it had an in force ending that resolvedalmosteverything and kept Rachel Keller ( played by Naomi Watts ) and her boy Aidan ( played by David Dorfman ) alive . So why make a sequel ? Well , why does Hollywoodevermake a subsequence ?
The story is set a few months after the event of the original film . Now that everybody in upstate Washington is freak out at anything that even looks like a VHS taping , Rachel decides her body of work there is done . She and Aidan move to Astoria , Oregon in the hopes of moving on with their life sentence . The problem is , almost like a shot after they show up , a teenage son turn up dead . It does n’t take Rachel long to visualise out that there was a VHS tape involve . Before Rachel can even react to the realisation that all the carnage in upstate Washington is about to double itself down in Oregon , she has a bigger problem to worry about . Her son Aidan is starting to act and await possessed . She rapidly realise that Samara , who caused all the trouble in the original movie , has not only bond around , but she has take over Aidan . To make issue worse , being consider over by Samara has some distinct disadvantage such as dropping his body temperature to 90 degrees ( which is normally fateful ) and reach him actreallyweird sometimes . That causes Rachel ’s coworker ( bet by Simon Baker ) and a psychiatrist at the infirmary where Aidan is being treat ( played by Elizabeth Perkins ) to suspect child abuse . Will Rachel ’s son be taken away from her ? Will she be able to cipher out how to end Samaraagain , now that Samara is manifest herself in a different way ? And how can she get Samara out of her son if she ca n’t even visit him ?
One trouble with sequel is that in many cases , the director of the sequel is not the same mortal who directed the original . In this sheath , managing director Hideo Nakata ’s directing style is noticeably dissimilar from that of Gore Verbinski , who directedThe Ring . That ’s always a big risk , because audiences come to expect a certain dash and flow rate from the original movie . If they ’re not there in the sequel , it could recoil . WhileThe Ringwas scary and suspenseful , The Ring Twotends to move very slow and methodically . There are a few genuinely shivery scene , but for the most part it ’s kind of tedious .
The performing was decent overall . Naomi Watts does a good job , as always . David Dorfman , who plays Rachel ’s son Aidan , came across as slow and wooden at first , but then I had to cue myself that he had to play two unlike characters — the regular nipper and the kid who was possessed by Samara . In that good sense , I thought he did a very good problem because I was never in doubt as to when something wacky was happening with him . There are cameo from Elizabeth Perkins , Sissy Spacek and Gary Cole . The cameo by Spacek and Perkins fit into the story quite well , but Cole ’s cameo was a unpointed waste of his endowment . Cole is one of my favorite actor ; he deserve a just use than that . Yeeeaaahhh … so if you could just go forward and sort of mould Gary Cole in better part from now on … that would be cracking , m’kay ?
Overall , I did n’t find the film terrible , but it certainly was n’t great . I wondered why it was even made in the first spot . For one thing , it cue me of those stinking telly shows where a character dies , then next calendar week they ’re back and the writers add up up with some lame excuse for why they did n’t die . I hate those variety of storylines , but that ’s almost on the dot what happened in this motion picture . If Samara can have people , why did n’t she just do that in the first film ? Maybe the weather in Astoria was more conducive to such a thing … As for the possession storyline , my goodness , where have I picture that before ? MaybeThe Exorcist ? Or how about something more recent , likeMatrix Revolutions ? Quite aboveboard , the whole film feel stale and regurgitated . Every patch point , no matter how surprising it was think of to be , felt like I had already seen it before . In their mad rushing to capitalize on pip movies , Hollywood require to think of that some film do n’t postulate sequel . They ’re good enough to suffer on their own .
If you really enjoyedThe Ringand you desire to see this one for the sake of completeness , place your expectations fitly low and you should be okay . Otherwise , do n’t put out .
