The Mechanic

Screen Rant ’s Vic Holtreman reviewsThe Mechanic

It open promisingly enough with a unsounded introduction to the head of a South American drug corporate trust . Within minutes we get a good sense of not only his power and ferociousness , but of his tremendous wealth . Statham appear on the scene to assassinate the guy cable in a pretty slick way ( " the best jobs are the ones where they never knew you were there " ) . In a tightly put together sequence we instruct all we demand to know about Statham ’s character ( incongruently name Arthur ): He ’s nerveless , focused , fearless - your canonic bad - screw .

Ah , but eventually Arthur must utter dialogue . I ’m a fan of Statham , but sometimes I wish well he ’d essay taking on an American stress for some roles - maybe he ’d deliver lines more effectively or in a less monotone manner . Do n’t get me untimely - he root for off guy - you - in spades - don’t - wishing - to - passel - with very effectively , but for me his delivery is by and large too monotone . He soon receive up with his mentor / contact Henry ( played by the always engaging Donald Sutherland ) . They ’re obviously very penny-pinching friends , and it seems that Arthur is the substitute for Henry ’s ne’er do well boy Steve ( Ben Foster ) .

Henry is implicated as a two-timer to " the companionship " by its possessor ( played by Tony Goldwyn ) . If you do n’t love him by name , check out his pictureand you ’ll have a go at it immediately that Henry has been frame . He is convincing , however , lay out what seems to be incontrovertible evidence , and asks Arthur to assassinate him . In the sake of sleep together he can do it in a nimble and ( relatively ) merciful style , Arthur accepts .

Soon after Steve appears on the scene - he and Arthur roll in the hay each other and Steve is resentful that he was exchange in his father ’s eye by Arthur . Of course his father still loved him , although he was distant . know this , Arthur takes Steve under his tutelage ( reluctantly ) and take aim him to be a " mechanic " - an assassin for hire . Having an anger and think streak a mile astray , Steve does n’t have a problem with this ( in fact , he require for it ) and he seems to be a quick study .

There were things I did like aboutThe Mechanic . Much of it has somewhat of a 70s movie vibration . It ’s blast mostly in a square mode ( up until a major action sequence towards the end of the film ) without too much habit of shaky - Cam River , jarring nimble cut edits or any of that " coolheaded " television camera oeuvre . There is lots of action mechanism / force ( include an awesome hand to hand combat scenery between Foster and a monstrously hugeJeff Chase ) and from time to time there are some low - key but suspect zinger of dialog in the movie .

Jason Statham in The Mechanic (review)

If it ’s not the sort of thing that have you squirm uncomfortably in your theater of operations tooshie , there ’s a pretty expressed sex scene early on that seemed gratuitous and just inserted ( excuse the wordplay ) because they could with the R - rating and they figured it might depict an consultation . Me , I ’m not a lover - implied is good enough for me .

On the other side we have the fact that it just felt kind of generic - nothing really memorable . have Sutherland in there in brief really made me more cognizant of how small I really handle about the other characters - because he ’s always able to make such a big impact even if he ’s not on screen very long . The film just goes through its thing , and I watched it mostly disinterested , but went along for the ride .

If you ’re a Statham or Foster fan , and you ’re looking for a no holds bar , gas constant - rated action movie during this sleepyheaded movie season , then maybeThe Mechanicwill lunar time period you over for a number . Otherwise , you might require to hold out forDrive Angry 3Din February starring Nic Cage to satisfy your R - rated action craving .
