The Lincoln Lawyer

Screen Rant ’s Vic Holtreman reviewsThe Lincoln Lawyer

The Lincoln Lawyerstarted off for me on the right annotation . The scuttle credits originate the motion picture with some cool retro - vocalise euphony and a definite early LXX vibe to the visuals , so it got some point from out out of the gate . The film waste no time in introducing us to   Matthew McConaughey as Mick Haller , a slick lawyer with more than a mite of con man who practise legal philosophy out of an old Lincoln Continental and defends accused criminals who would otherwise be depending on a public   suspect . Of naturally he does n’t do this pro - bono , but instead nominate some very good coin which usually come from the ill - cause gain of those he defends .

He ’s always on the scout for a case that will lend him some decent hard cash , regardless of who the defendant is - and as the film go on we discover this has caused his marriage to   Maggie Macpherson   ( played by Marisa Tomei ) to come to an last . They share a young daughter and while they ’re divorced , they ’re still on ( more than ) speaking terms . She also happens to be a prosecuting officer , which puts her on the polar " squad " when it comes to court battles .

A crony , Val ( John Leguizamo ) , take Mick a casing that could be deserving a LOT of money : A rich kid from a very moneyed and powerful kinsfolk has been arrest for pose up a prostitute quite disadvantageously . He insist ( very convincingly ) that he ’s ingenuous - not that it matter to Mick - and Mick hold the instance . Mickey cultivate with secret investigator and long sentence friend Frank Levin ( play by   William   H Macy sporting a cool retentive hair look ) . Frank has a high-risk touch about the kid ( play by Ryan Phillippe ) - and although Mick is super street - savvy , he ’s a chip blinded by the amount of possible money need .

As is common in this form of moving-picture show , thing are not what they seem ( and frankly , the preview for this contribute away much more than it needed to ) and we ’re left with not only find how Mick oppose the showcase , but his opinion as he begins to suspect that his client may not in fact be the wide - eyed innocent he claim to be .

The screenplay was written by John Romano and has decent dialog - despite the overall serious tone of the film there were quite a few lighthearted moments throughout that elicited laughter from the consultation ( and even tender old me ) . It ’s based on a novel by source Michael Connelly , whose oeuvre I ’m not familiar with - the closest comparison I could think of is that it remind me of an adaptation of a John Grisham novel .

Matthew McConaughey in The Lincoln Lawyer (review)

Brad Furman directed the film , and either it was more prevalent early on or I just got used to it - but he could n’t help but apply shaky River Cam correctly from the get go . I ’m grim , but there ’s nothing more annoying to me than trembling cam used in scenery where the only matter happening is two people are having a CONVERSATION . I do n’t dig the presuppose cinema verité   thing of the handheld , you - are - there schooling of filmmaking . If there is a scene where two people are just have a conversation , I want the camera to stand for my degree of view while ascertain them - and when I ’m in a conversation with people I do n’t bob and weave like a boxer , thank you very much . There was also some of the extreme secretive - up camera work I ’ve seen recently and it ’s a bit much - I do n’t need to be so close that I can see the pore on peoples ' faces .

But I digress …

Before you bulge out thinking I did n’t likeThe Lincoln Lawyer , let me guide you back - I really bask the pic a lot . McConaughey , who , frankly , is not jazz for his acting chops , did a very admirable job here . Of of course he has no problem play amiable and charming , but he also brought a serious-mindedness and a bit of intensity that go beyond anything I ’ve seen him do previously . Ryan Phillippe did a decent job , although there was something about his carrying into action that felt a morsel at weapon system ’s length or a small frigidness - but then one could say that was appropriate for the part he was playing . Macy is ALWAYS a joy to catch in any role he plays and that was the slip here once again .

Matthew McConaughey and Ryan Phillippe in ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’

The Lincoln Lawyer stars Matthew McConaughey as Mick Haller, a charismatic defense attorney who operates out of the back of his Lincoln Town Car. Based on Michael Connelly’s novel, the film revolves around Haller as he grapples with a high-profile case that blurs the lines between innocence and guilt, featuring a cast that includes Marisa Tomei and Ryan Phillippe. Directed by Brad Furman, the movie delves into themes of justice and morality.

It was skillful seeing Marisa Tomei back again in a clean beefy bear role ( although I will forever see her as the girlfriend inMy Cousin Vinny ) . Although John Leguizamo is in the film , do n’t go in expecting to see much of him - he ’s in it for maybe five minutes full .

The script bounces around a spot and unfortunately if you think about the ending too much you may snicker a bit , but overall , if you ’re look for an engaging and entertaining effectual thriller , then you might require to check outThe Lincoln Lawyer .
