The Karate Kid
Screen Rant ’s Vic Holtreman reviewsThe Karate Kid
What ’s going on here ? Two movies released in one weekend that are remakes of dear source stuff from the 80s ( there ’s this andThe A - squad ) ? WellThe A - Teampassed the test and now it ’s time to see whether this rebirth of the originalKarate Kidwhich starred Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita way back in 1984 measures up .
With this moving-picture show we ’ve had yet another case of " do n’t deflower my childhood " screams from denizens of the internet . While like many of you , I have my favorites that I believe should NEVER be touched in an attack to milk some cash from a familiar name ( please , God , do n’t let thatCasablancaremake on the drafting board EVER see the light of day ) , I ’ve come to learn in my gain ground years that some motion-picture show and TV demonstrate from our past times are not quite as gravid as we remember them to be .
However the originalKarate Kiddoes NOT pass into the " nostalgia - good " family : It is definitely as secure as you commemorate it - so the inquiry ( for me , anyway ) is whether this Modern film passes the test of " worthy " remake and whether it stands on its own , even pass judgment apart from the original ( which is actually the more of import enquiry ) .
In this reincarnation of the film we have Jackie Chan playing the instructor ( Mr. Han ) and Jaden Smith playing the browbeat new minor in Ithiel Town ( Dre Parker ) . In this compositor’s case the township is Beijing , where he and his mother have moved after the machine factory she operate for in Detroit closed down . Apparently Dre ’s mummy was transfer from Detroit to China by the companionship ( a situation that strained credulity if you involve me ) . She ’s pollyannaish about passably much everything , much like the mamma in the original film , much to Dre ’s mortification .
Upon arriving he catch a calf love on a local girl called Meiying ( diddle by Wenwen Han ) , who is cultivate to become a violinist and hopes to insert the esteemed Beijing Music Academy . In this version the yobo is an overprotective supporter of the family alternatively of an ex - beau , and it does n’t take too long into the movie until the initial beatdown happens .
We go through similar motion that we ’ve seen in the original flick , with Dre make to avoid the bully and his gang , although in this rendering they emphasize Dre ’s fear of the bullies more than they did in the original . In a fleck of jejune revenge Dre dumps some variety of liquid on the rowdy and is chased and corner by half a XII who are beat him badly when Mr. Han comes to the rescue . The scene where Jackie Chan fends off half a dozen young kung - fu bullies is pretty comic . Also here his character is shown to be not quite as seemingly invincible as Pat Morita ’s character come across .
You jazz how the story will go : Mr. Han tries to conclude with the malefic kung - fu school teacher , reluctantly takes on Dre as a educatee , has Dre execute ostensibly nonmeaningful tasks for thousands of repetitions , this turn into warriorlike arts grooming and we eventually end up at the big warlike arts tournament .
And do they excuse why they call the filmThe KARATE Kidinstead ofThe KUNG FU Kid ? Barely . There ’s a throwaway sentence by Jaden about 30 minute of arc in that ’s certainly not enough to rationalize it . They just named it that to tie it to the original , and in my opinion they could have done that with the latter ( and initial ) title . Bad selling move if you call for me .
The Karate Kid is a 2010 remake of the original martial arts drama film released in 1984. Directed by Harald Zwart, this new telling follows young Dre Parker who after a big move with his mother from Detroit, Michigan to Beijing, China, finds difficulty fitting in and manages to get caught in a bullies' crosshairs. Dre is saved by the mysterious maintenance worker named Mr. Han, who teaches him Kung Fu in order to defend himself.
DirectorHarold Zwartdoesn’t exactly have a high brow flick pedigree ( Agent Cody Banks , Pink Panther 2 ) and here he does an adequate job . It ’s nothing salient but it ’s not terrible , either . Sure , there were some beautiful shots of Beijing , China ’s hatful and wooded areas , but I ’d have to say to me it feel almost more like a made for TV picture show than anything else . While Will Smith ’s Logos Jaden is an OK petty actor , he ’s not yet ready to have a bun in the oven an entire film . There just was n’t as much sum in the thing as they were shooting for . One thing I did get a beef out of though was where in a twosome of scene Jaden was emphatically channeling his dad ’s affectation . On the other hand some of the emphasis on how buff he was with a few shirtless scenes fall upon me as a bit … unearthly ( considering he was just 11 when this was shoot ) . Similarly , I found a scene in which the young noblewoman he had a crush on danced fairly provocatively ( for a 12 class old ) to be too much considering her age .
Besides following the overall plot of the original very tight , there were several nods to that photographic film that were nice to see - and I think the substitute for " wax on , wax off " was n’t spoiled .
It takes a while to warm up to the characters - too long , really , but once it gets down to the final 30 minutes or so the film better quite a bit . It was quite cunning in a few places and the scene where Dre find out the beginning of Mr. Han ’s sedate disposition was really quite touching . And speaking of Jackie Chan , I thought he was quite estimable in this use - a fitting one for an aging warriorlike arts pic master such as himself .

Overall , I ’d just call this a fresh take on the master copy - it ’s not as dependable ( even with the first film ’s 80s music throughout ) , but it ’s not a horrible stain on the memory of that film either . My account is peradventure a bit generous than it might be ( half a star ) because I ’m concerned I might be compare it to the original ( which I saw the dark before I see this one ) too much . However I opine audiences will like this motion-picture show , especially the young ' uns who ’ve never seen the 1984 version and wo n’t cognize ahead of time how the taradiddle unfolds . It ’s rat PG so it ’s OK for kids , although some of the very young ones might not wish project Dre get beaten up pretty gravely .
So , sure , go checker out this version ofThe Karate Kid- but afterward bump some sentence to engage the original or find it on TV if you or your tike have never seen it . you may thank me afterwards . :)
Finally , here ’s another feeling at the dawdler for the film to assist you settle .
