Overall, this movie was silly and formulaic. The threadbare plot and insipid dialogue made it almost unwatchable at times, but the movie partially redeemed itself by including a few action sequences that pandered to me.
consecrate the fact that this movie was directed by Michael Bay , I was n’t expectingCitizen Kanewhen I pose down to watch it , but I have to take that despite a few interesting action mechanism sequences , I was really surprised by how bad it was . After the moving picture was over , I watch out a " make Of " documentary about the movie , which I thought was far more interesting than the picture show itself . The first scene in that documentary is Michael Bay being interviewed on photographic camera . He ’s talking about how he told the writers not to go into detail about the action successiveness . He only wanted them to put the word " legal action " in the script where they wanted an action succession , and he would get along up with the specific particular himself at a ulterior time . At first glimpse , such an overture does n’t seem unreasonable , but confide me , that ’s his way of saying that he puts far more value on action scenes than plot line or character development .
The Islandis a very unique film for Michael Bay in a couple of dissimilar ways . It ’s the first feature motion-picture show Bay has directed that was n’t produced by Jerry Bruckheimer , and it was a boxful authority loser , make only about $ 36 million in the U.S. According toIMDB , Bay ’s next project is theTransformersmovie . That does n’t go like every managing director ’s dream to me , but Steven Spielberg is listed as an executive manufacturer , so what do I know ?
The Islandis set in the year 2019 , and it start out in a contained , reasonably utopian facility . Everyone in the installation has been assure that they are the only survivors of a major contamination disaster that killed off the rest of the mankind ’s population . living in the quickness is pleasant enough , but in the end boring and unfulfilling . What everyone looks forward to , more than anything else , is a lottery of sorts held at regular interval . The winner of each drawing gets to go live on The Island ™ , where there is ataraxis , successfulness , love , happiness , puppy pawl and rainbows .
Dr. Merrick ( dally by Sean Bean ) , who runs the readiness , is proud of with how everything is going . At least he is until Lincoln Six Echo ( played by Ewan McGregor ) pop out asking " too many " questions . Why do citizenry keep fall in the installation ? Where are they coming from ? Did n’t the pollution belt down everyone else off ? Where do all those pipes go , and what are they for ? Why does everyone wear clean uniforms , which are difficult to keep clean ? ( It scared me to hear a guy ask that last question . ) Lincoln ’s best friend is Jordan Two Delta ( played by Scarlett Johansson ) , who ends up winning the next lottery to go to The Island ™ . Quite by chance event , Lincoln discovers a grade in the deftness that he was not supposed to know about . He end up seeing two people who had purportedly move to The Island ™ , but instead they finish up being killed while he catch . Fearful for Jordan ’s life history , Lincoln helps her relief valve from the facility into the outside world , which turns out to be quite unpolluted .
As luck would have it , the first position Lincoln wanders into happens to be a hangout for a friend of his from the facility , a guy cable named McCord ( played by Steve Buscemi ) . After McCord bring forth over his initial impact and incredulity from seeing Lincoln and Jordan outside the facility , he hides them at his seat and explains that there is no such place as The Island ™ ( ya think ? ) , and that everyone in the adroitness is a knockoff of a human who has pay good money for the clone ’s " unornamented portion . " Some are foster moms , others are there to offer eyes , others are there to provide a liver or kidney , but all of them are ultimately kill after their purpose has been swear out . Lincoln and Jordan are shocked ( yes , dismayed ! ) by this , um , scandalous revelation , and they straight off resolve to inform their human counterparts of the evil , deceptive practice session that are being used by Dr. Merrick and his facility . Of naturally , Dr. Merrick , not desire to lose his multi - billion buck business , hires a mercenary by the name of Albert Laurent ( represent by Djimon Hounsou ) to cut through down Lincoln and Jordan . There are so many nail - biting questions at this point . Will Lincoln and Jordan be able-bodied to traverse down their human similitude and let them sleep together what the facility isreallydoing to its citizens ? Even if they ’re successful , will the human counterparts even like ? Will Laurent and his squad get up to them first ? Will plenty of action sequences take place in the meantime ? What will happen to everyone else inside the facility ? Will a making love story evolve between the two lead characters , despite the fact that they were " programmed " not to have any such desire and the actors who dally them are 13 years apart in material spirit ?
Seriously , I could feel my IQ drop while I watched this moving-picture show . It felt that " dumbed down . " There were a few action at law sequences that were so well done that I felt compelled to keep my rating above the dreaded " one star or less " theshold . Probably my favorite action sequence was one that involved a flatbed hand truck carrying lots of train bicycle sets that look like barbells . ( I inquire why such thing were necessary , since all the trains are depict as mag - lev , but I ’m sure some techno - eccentric will set me true . ) I was also struck by the fact that every automobile chase scene involve Dodge Magnums — model year 2005 , to be exact . I call up I was the only individual who drive a 14 - class - old car ; it ’s courteous to have it off I ’m not alone . And the path the movie depicts the future … that ’s only 14 years away . I do n’t even cogitate the local thruway improvement undertaking near my place is pass away to be done in 14 years , and this motion picture would have us believe that all the trains are last mag - lev , some vehicles can fly … yeah , okay . Sure …
So is this movie deserving watching ? Honestly , I ca n’t envisage anyone for whom the answer is yes . Armageddonis evenly stupid , but it ’s more gratifying . The Rockhas equally insipid dialogue , but it ’s kind of nerveless to see Sean Connery liven up the screen . I ’m not sure what the exact reason was for the box office staff bankruptcy ofThe Island , but my best guess is because it was n’t a " palpate good " movie , and the two lead roles should have been remould . If you arrange your expectation appropriately low and take plenty of Zea mays everta , you might be okay , but I conceive it ’s safe to say that one of Bay ’s former masterpieces might fit the bill a little better .
