Although the film is often immediate to bounce from one aspect of Wain ’s living to the next in energising bursts of DOE , there is a lovely through - line that carries it to the end . Elevating the film is also Benedict Cumberbatch ’s brilliant cardinal performance . The actor portrays Wain as an often crinkle , if deeply caring , man who is easily distracted , but who is mesmerized by the existence in equal measure . Most of which is showcased through his kinship with Claire Foy ’s Emily , in whom he sees the sweetheart in life story and in art . With Emily , he is incredibly gentle and the pair have a whole mint of alchemy together , with Foy bring a woman who is not so implicated with what bon ton has to say about her than she is in teaching and loving .
The photographic film is carefully craft in its attempts at realise Wain ’s mind , from the recurring nightmare that haunt him to the abbreviated glimpses of happiness that come with fame , though none of it can cancel the mystifying and lingering grief following the last of Emily . While Wain brought animals to life through art , Sharpe and cinematographer Erik Wilson bring him to life through scenes that depict him through paintings that are vivid in colouring and serene in the occasional second of peace the illustrator feels as reality , and his icon of it , combine together in perfect harmony with his own guile . Sharpe never define the illustrator by his mental illness ( it ’s been contend that Wain was schizophrenic ) even when it starts to greatly impact his life . When the film is at its best , it ’s quirky and strangely poetic . It ’s also as messy as Wain ’s animation was , somewhat struggling to find oneself that electricity that fuels the story .
ButThe Electrical Life of Louis Wainis so utterly charming and perky that it make even the frustrative panorama of the motion picture forgivable . The tinges of darkness linger at the computer peripheral before it comes seep to the forefront , though Sharpe does n’t let it sit for too long before bouncing back to the lighthearted tone thanks , in part , to Olivia Colman ’s effective and rather jubilant tale . Still , the ending of Wain ’s life is filled with nothing but sadness as his genial wellness deteriorates , his celebrity dwindles , and the joyousness he contribute to so many all but wash away . The pic makes it apparent that , although his draft were beloved , Wain himself did n’t live as wondrous a life no matter how many life he touched through his body of work . It ’s a reminder that careers ebb and flow and the life behind it is n’t as happy as some would like it to be .
Despite the tonic inconsistencies , The Electrical Life of Louis Wainis never dull or devoid of heart as it play to explore Wain through all of his complexities at various detail in his life . Its eccentricities are what keep it afloat as Sharpe warmly and tenderly delves into the military man at the center of it all . It ’s a biopic that is equally charismatic and poignant , touching and saturnine . It ’s the amalgamation of these things , fueled by an exuberant amount of energy and attention , that makes this film work even when all the pieces do n’t exactly fit .
