The Cursed

The Cursed(previously titledEight For Silver ) is a taradiddle about consequences . Steeped in diachronic context , the film follows the inhabitants of a small village suffering from a curse word after a chemical group of landholder hit a Roma clan . The invective and atrociousness hurled at these innocent people descend back to seize with teeth land mogul Seamus Laurent ( Alistair Petrie ) in the buns when his Word and daughter become victim of this curse , as well as his whole townspeople . Enter pathologist John McBride ( Boyd Holbrook ) , who has been following the Roma clan in promise of finding the accuracy behind the destruction of his family , who   also aids this plagued townspeople against the sinister evil that lurks within the wood .

The curse follow from the land tycoon ’s desire to keep “ his ” ground and in doing so the Roma people , who possess phantasmal power , anathemise their oppressor . The Baron and his town face the aftermath by slow being pick off by a vindictive creature . The photographic film begin with a savage curtain raising chronological sequence set during World War I. It ’s here   that writer - director Sean Ellis sets the tint . The Cursedis a slow march through the violence world bring down upon each other and his attack is unflinchingly good .   There is a soldier hoisted into an infirmary tent where a medico pull out out three bullets , one of which is a fang - shaped silver hummer .   The moving picture then flashes back   to Seamus Laurent ’s baseborn estate where his sweet children bet and his wife , Isabelle ( Kelly Reilly ) , stud on her home . Ellis , who is also   the cinematographer , does n’t contrast the tone of the picture show with this shift in meter . Rather , the dark and sombre atmosphere   is an extension of his cinematography   as he shrouds the Laurents under a heavy level of fog and gray skies that import trouble .

The Cursed - Poster

The Cursed , which should have kept its more interesting titleEight for Silver , is a dim burn . It is not the typical werewolf drama set in the past   — in this case , the nineteenth - hundred — where fury about a supernatural beast builds momentum for an explosive end . alternatively , Ellis opt to slowly trudge through to the end , build on the fearsome circumstances with raise up imaging to make a great deal of dread rather than tingle and suspense . The film does n’t forge on about werewolf lore   and there is lilliputian acknowledgment of the supernatural creature at all . The Beast of Gévaudan is note in passing , but that is merely a nod to what the film is about . At a length , the picture show be given on the history of lycanthropy , but there is little musing about the how and what is happening . What is left is self-contradictory social commentary , as well as an odd conflation of werewolf mythos with organized religion , and it ’s all too much forThe Cursedto   chew on .

While the motion-picture show is as gilded as   the average gothic period drama set in Europe , it is lacking in identity element . There is no unifying vision when it come to crafting the lore of the puppet that stalks the village , and very little reckoning with the moment that spur this state of affairs . The movie opened with the horrors of the trench in World War I , but the story in reality starts with the eradication of a Roma kindred that is filmed from a distance , but is not any less disturbing . There seems to be an effort to verbalize to the casual brutality towards marginalize grouping in a colonial social club , butThe Cursedis uninterested in really question the problem or efficaciously dealing with what the narrative suggests .

As well - intentioned as Ellis is , his choices ultimately continue to marginalize , stereotype , and throw out the experience of the Roma people , using their hurt as fresh fish for his repugnance moving picture . Ellis is not interested in using the tale to drive home some commentary about colonization and racial discrimination . The setup vilifies the Romas further as   they have no presence past their horrendous death . They are faceless or grotesque terrors that haunt the incubus of children and employ them to spread the curse . The Cursedis a film that is absorb in history and attempts to subtly suggest that purity and the ignorant pursuance of transcendence have their consequence .

the cursed review

Horror is no stranger to smartly veil social commentary , but whatThe Cursedlacks is depth and momentum . Contributing to that is a relentlessly monotonic and grave tone , which emphasizes the tepid and boring performances , most notably from Holbrook , who is merely a vessel for information .   Ultimately , The Cursedis merely a slow trek through dread gore , lacklustre and perplexing werewolf lore , and a muddled intellect of the bequest of the Roma . In more discerning hands , the moving picture could have accomplished what Sean Ellis seemingly set out to do . As it stands , The Cursedis not   a werewolf repulsion deserving devouring .
