The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Screen Rant ReviewsThe Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a film adapted from the 1921 short storey by F. Scott Fitzgerald , about a man who is born older and continue to age in turnaround until his death . The picture adaptation conduct this interesting premise and stretch it out ( agency , way , out ) into a prolonged meditation on the nature of life-time , death , and everything human that is crammed in between .
The ruminative tone is cursorily established at the onset as the film opens on a hospital room in which a dying woman require her daughter to read to her from the diary of a man named Benjamin Button , hoping that Button ’s expression on the black eye - trend of his life will give her some form of perspective on life in her own final consequence . The rest , as they say , is flashback . The matter is these flashbacks have the outcome of making us feel as though we are go through a form of dreaming remember . Thank superb manager David Fincher for that .
The principle casting is relatively diminished : Brad Pitt play the titular character ( with the help of some brilliant F / X and make-up ) ; Cate Blanchett play Button ’s long - seek love , Daisy ; and the way underrated Taraji P. Henson diddle Benjamin ’s adopted mother , Queenie . Over the grade of the movie some other conversant faces ( like Tilda Swinton ) come and go , as Benjamin lay down his means through living , one adventure at a time . I have no criticisms of the actress in the film . Blanchett excels a usual , and Henson once again takes what could ’ve been a peripheral eccentric and pervade her with light and life ( many of the film ’s best lines are hers ) .
The only debatable actor in the ensemble is Pitt himself . While his scenes as untried ( elderly ) Benjamin are rattling , by the time Benjamin is middle elderly and Pitt appears onscreen sans the liver spot , the fame ’s all too familiar face asterisk back at us , blank as a mask that never really cracks to let even the slight hint of emotion escape . I understand that there is a very zen spirit to the moving-picture show , but Benjamin should n’t have been portrayed as such the zen master key . The whole item of the account ( we ’re told ) is that he is as human ( id est confused and flawed ) as any of us .
The " over - zen " problem does n’t end with Pitt , either . David Fincher may be my favorite director : his craftsmanship is so challenging , complete , flawless and cunning that certain sequences in this film look like paintings in apparent movement that will never evanesce from memory . Having extol all that kudos , however , problems arise when the director ’s technique overwhelms the heart of the story – as is the case , regrettably , in this pic .
Somewhere around 60 minutes 2.5The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttonloses its heart : Benjamin needs get youthful and jr. while those around him age and die . The F / X are cool and the climatical moment of Benjamin ’s regression are quietly prompt , however the emotional impingement is left up to Cate Blanchett ’s ( thankfully able ) play . It is her gray , wrinkling , face that offer the only emotional leash for the consultation , as she fight to accommodate her love in a very human way to circumstances that are almost too fantastic to imagine ( or watch ) . And , for all of Ms. Blanchett ’s massive talent , unfortunately it ’s not enough to keep most picture show leaver from getting itchy for a water break around hour 2.75 .
The other criticismBenjamin Buttonhas received is that it is little more thanForrest Gumpwith a good F / go budget . This criticism I do not fit in with . Gump was a fiber blissfully incognizant of his own piazza in the grade of life and account . Benjamin Buttonis a fiber all too aware of his topographic point : an oddness to the rest of the earth , yet never feel anything else but human while ' looking out of his own eyes . ' And while some critics might see reverse aging as a sorting of cheap narrative equipment , it nonetheless serves to prove the point that no matter which steering we are headed along the spectrum of life and death – no matter which track we are taking– we are all on a journey that ultimately delivers us all to the same destiny . It is hefty , poignant , profound and ( as my grandmother say to me after ) sad . Forrest Gumpwas just an entertaining story .
Go seeThe Curious Case of Benjamin Button , if for no other ground than the fact that you ’re going to be see about it for weeks to come as award season feeler . It is a phenomenal piece of cinema , one weight down with an emotionally spellbind news report . It could have used an pause , though , and do n’t require Brad Pitt ’s name to get tossed into the awarding categories this year . Just enjoy the film for its crated beauty and let it take you on its journey – it ’s deserving the just the ticket price .
