The Chronicles of Riddick’s amazing production design and action make up for the huge plot holes in this surprisingly decent movie.
I honestly can not believe I ’m about to typewrite this , but … I enjoyedThe Chronicles of Riddick .
I had just add up off of two premature years of regretful ( Van Helsing ) or at the very best , forgettable ( The Day After Tomorrow ) picture show when I decide what - the - heck - let’s - throw - the - dice on this one . I wholly expected this thing to stink , even as a " check your brain at the doorway " movie , but I was pleasantly ( and shockingly ) surprised .
The movie open up with Riddick in hiding from " Mercs " ( you ’re just not coolheaded if you do n’t contract ) due to a $ 1 million+ price on his head . His " badass quotient " is established now in a section involving a ship pilot through a tight canyon , where he take out a few spoiled Guy individual handedly and without a artillery . There was something about the way the exteriors were flash that told me I might be in for something cool .
At least visually , I was right .
This movie had the most amazing production design I ’ve seen in a Sci Fi film sinceDune . The alien ships and technology looked truly " exotic " and the effects around the ship while in flying really made it look like solemnity was being distorted . I have to give Brobdingnagian props to the visual team of this movie .
canonic plot line is that Riddick is called by one of the character in the first film ( Pitch Black ) to avail defend a planet against a airstream of maraud aliens . These aliens take over a macrocosm , and offer the inhabitants an chance to convert to their religion ( " The Underverse " ) and become soldiers , or break down . That sound spookily familiar to me as I sat there ….
Of of course Riddick is loth at first but eventually come around for personal understanding , and eventually much butt - kicking ensues . One of my best-loved scenes lead property while he is chain by both metrical unit and hand in a rail - type car , apparentlyimmobile . :-)
Plenty of action here to keep everyone slaked , and Vin Diesel is worthy of the title of " Next Big Action Star " . He ’s induce that looking that if he were to take the air into a way and do perfectly nothing evenremotelythreatening , you ’d still get laid to keep your aloofness .
Of course there is plenty of absurdness in the film , include trying to outrun the upcoming break of the day by abide in the terminator ( No , not Ahnuld . Also curious was the costume modification by Thandie Newton ’s reference right at before a pivotal moment .
One complaint I do have about the film ( and other late activeness moving-picture show ) is this novel hyper - editing style that ’s used during competitiveness sequence . There were time during this flick that I literally could not tell what was going on . Between the dissolute cuts and the strobe lights , I was truly lost . I had to determine to just sit back , not examine to ache myself trying to calculate it out , and hold back for the next setting .
Oh , and justwhatwas Judi Dench doing in this picture show ? ! All I can surmise is that although she ’s been in some splendid moving-picture show , they ’ve all been low level paychecks , and that the studio made her an go she could n’t turn down .

So , although even in Sci Fi / Action films I ’m usually a stickler for secret plan and character developing , The Chronicles of Riddickhas enough " cool " factor to make it worth checking out .
