The Boondock Saints

This movie took a half-baked idea and executed it so poorly that the end result is almost unwatchable. This is a cinematic disaster that should be avoided at all costs.

First , I should give you a little background . You may be wondering why I am reviewing a movie that was publish in 1999 . Well , what set off my involvement in it was the fact that there is another movie in theatre correctly now , calledOvernight , about the rise and fall of Troy Duffy , the author / music director ofThe Boondock Saints . To make a retentive floor short , Troy Duffy was a bartender in Boston who was pluck out of obscurity by being in the right place at the right time . His script forThe Boondock Saintswent into a summons war and was ultimately blame up by Harvey Weinstein , the head of Miramax Studios . Duffy ended up with a lulu sight that landed him in the theatre director ’s professorship . With expectations so eminent , it was not surprising that Duffy failed to live up to the hype . He stop up alienating the studio as well as his own friends , and Miramax dropped their pursuit in the cinema . A modest self-governing studio apartment called Franchise ended up making the film for a fraction of the budget Miramax had offered . Slaughtered by critics , the film ended up on video without ever seeing a wide firing in theaters .

After learn all the uncollectible buzz aboutThe Boondock Saints , I thought to myself , " The national of the motion-picture show is intriguing . sure it ca n’t be that speculative . " So I look on it to see for myself . Yup , it was that bad . Actually , it was much spoilt than I expect . Nearly every notable scene is blatantly rip off from other ( better ) movies , mostly by Quentin Tarantino . As if that ’s not bad enough , there are so many tough - movie clichés that this movie should be bookmarked as a unequivocal reference . Here are just a few model :

… and that ’s only the summit of the iceberg .

The storyline centers around Connor McManus ( Sean Patrick Flanery ) and his fraternal twin Murphy ( Norman Reedus ) . They are Irishmen who survive in a Boston neighborhood that is mostly controlled by the Russian mafia . Tired of being bullyrag , they pop to form the belief that God need them to incline of the bad guys . Their call to military action comes in the form of a preaching in which the non-Christian priest talks about the emotionlessness of in force people . Not long after that , they meet some Russians who are trying to forcefully take over a legal profession that they frequent . They choose to fight , and the Russians cease up dead . After read the deadened Russians ' guns and money , Connor and Murphy take in that they can make a effective living by disposing of bad guys than they can from the menial job they currently have . They finish up going to the police post and recite FBI agent Paul Smecker ( Willem Dafoe ) that they killed the Russians in ego - defense . ( They leave out the part where they took the ordnance and money . ) Smecker let the twins go , and they receive quite a scrap of public adoration for throw away of the scumbags . Before long , the twin embark on their unexampled " career , " and more bushed bodies set out piling up . Almost immediately , Agent Smecker figures out who is doing the killings , and he bulge to mount a case against the twins . Things are complicated by the fact that the pack retaliate against the twins by hiring an assassin ( Billy Connolly ) to pour down them , as well as the fact that the public appreciate what the twins ( by now known as " The Saints " in the press ) are doing .

This is far from an original concept ( ever take heed ofNatural Born Killers ? ) , but the idea is at least challenging . The trouble is , I have never hear it executed well ( no paronomasia intended ) . I hatedNatural Born Killers , and this movie certainly did n’t raise the bar on the genre . For starters , almost every role in this motion picture was dreadfully miscast . Only Carlo Rota , who plays a crime boss , does a halfway becoming acting line , and even he is over the top sometimes . Norman Reedus ' Irish emphasis is especially troublesome , and Willem Dafoe is so over the top that he seems to be transport Jeremy Irons fromDungeons and tartar . Even worse is the persona of " Funny Man " ( David Della Rocco ) . In real life , he never did any acting before ( or after ) this motion-picture show , and it shows . His frenzied , over - the - top hamola performance sticks out like a sore thumb , and that ’s really allege something considering how regretful the other actor are . Note to shoot for movie maker : If you need to project a sleazy mob character , there are dear choices than smut actor Ron Jeremy . And if you require to cast a dangerous assassin , there are good choices than comic Billy Connolly . ( Trivia alert : Another motion picture feature Billy Connolly , Timeline , was also mow down on this site . ) And finally , if you ’re swan a lead office , it might be wise to think twice before you rent someone who also starred in a wild-eyed comedy have amagical pubic louse . ( I only wish I were making that up . )

Without giving away any essential details ( just in case you desire to see this caravan wreck for yourself ) , there were three scenes that were awful enough to merit a especial mention :
