Student Bodyhas its moments , but is ultimately a missable horror moving picture . The performances are what one might expect from a unseasoned cast and writer - director Lee Ann Kurr ( Lindsey Luff : prompt Me ) does little to subvert the music genre . The antagonist is certainly menacing , but there are almost no saltation scares and the scares that do populate the movie are nothing to compose home about . While parts ofStudent Bodyare both socially contemporary and well - execute , it ’s the repose of the movie that does n’t prevail up its end of the steal .
When Jane Shipley ( Montse Hernandez ) is the only one in her class to pass Mr. Aunspach ’s ( Christian Caramago ) nearly impossible mental test , her schoolfellow & childhood friend Merrit Sinclair ( Cheyenne Hayes ) , comes up with a way to get the rest of the class a retake . Merrit is n’t alone either , association football star Nadia Parker ( Harley Quinn Smith ) has had enough of the guy rope at school . Not only is Nadia ’s playing career at stake due to her grade on Mr. Aunspach ’s test , but the schoolhouse mascot Brody ( Ty Trumbo ) , makes it a point to stuff her around and call her inappropriate names after equal . Blindly use up one for the team , Jane approaches Mr. Aunspach and take her case for the retake . His response borders on violence , prompting Jane and Merrit to approach the principal and he is as arrogant as he is unhelpful . That is , until Merrit convinces him that firing Mr. Aunspach is the only mode to keep her family ’s money coming into the prestigious and pricey school day . In the immediate backwash of the teacher ’s release , Jane and all her friend are locked inside the school with a sledgehammer - wielding mascot bend on execution . Is it the roughneck who regularly get across the mascot ? The detested teacher ? Or the school principal being blackmailed ?

Student Bodyis best when it ’s looking down on toxic masculinity . The relationship the young women have with men is both terrifying and relevant . Two scenes , in finical , illustrate these horrors . When Mr. Aunspach explodes at the idea of a retake he does everything but physically harm Jane . He grab her things , throws them on the story , unleashes a verbal tirade , and calls every educatee except her worthless . His behavior is just wild enough to frighten a teenage young woman and just sound enough to not separate any substantial law . In the scene where the principal does not believe that any of this warrants discipline on the teacher ’s part , he taper out that , not only did Mr. Aunspach human action within the school ’s guidelines , but he was doing her a favour .
Student Bodytakes groovy care to create a terrifyingly accurate environment that is all too realistic … for about 25 minutes . The residuum of the film is by - the - numbers at best and slapstick at worst . There is a dearest story with Nadia that rings true but ends before it can even begin and an unreciprocated sexual love story with Merrit that over - explains her graphic symbol trait . And while Jane and Mr. Aunspach are compelling characters , the acting is not remarkable . The vicious school mascot is certainly menacing and a visually engaging scoundrel but does not get enough concealment time to cause true havoc .

Trapped inside grade school day with the menace of the hoi polloi in power not trust a Holy Writ you say is a nightmare unto itself , and with a Orcinus orca on the on the loose , the stakes are well higher . accord , this movie does not have the bone of a definitive phycological thriller , butStudent Bodyis well with less gore and more thought . finally , it ’s a not bad premise that offers lilliputian else , duck serious issues that devolve into a laughable slasher film . Not dissimilar from the real world , the scary part ofStudent Bodyis patriarchy and gaslighting , not getting strike in the head with a sledge by the schoolhouse ’s mascot .
