Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulseis   fondly think back by a chunk oforiginal Xbox fansas a niche collision , but the zombie actioner from developer Wideload Games did not set the world on fire   when it ab initio released in 2005 . publishing house Aspyr has revived this shambling clay from its perpetual resting station , sic it for discharge on modern consoles and microcomputer with as much passion and care as is possible for an HD rerelease . Still , upon playingStubbs the Zombiein 2021 , it ’s hard to see this crusade as anything but a task of love . It ’s sometimes hard to go back to the yesteryear , and this undead adventure through the town of Punchbowl is a select example .

Players rise from their grave accent in the futuristic urban center of Punchbowl as Stubbs , a zombie with a nerveless fedora and a cigarette that never loses its light . The narrative setup in - plot is modified , although a few cutscenes do   at least channelize Stubbs in the right direction . Gameplay lie in of shambling through populated areas and eating the learning ability of civilian , cops , reserves member , and the military . Each newly turned zombie will eventually rise and quest for their own mentality , giving the gameaPikminvibeon the surface . unluckily , these zombie following are both obtuse and fragile , so it ’s concentrated for all but the most punctilious of players to work up up anything resemble a zombie spirit horde .

Stubbs also has a few other abilities at his disposal , including an burst intestine grenade , a mitt that possess unsuspicious humans , and a wind that stuns chemical group of enemies . These power all come rapid - fire in the first fistful of levels and process as the only upgrades Stubbs have over the 3 - 4 hr campaign .   Each power charges with more brain white plague , while wellness is just on a cooldown like Master Chief ’s recharging shell .

This comparison to theXbox ’s space leatherneck mascotis appropriate . Stubbs the Zombiesold itself on its usage of the same engineering that poweredHalo : Combat Evolvedback in the daylight . While telling at the prison term , 2005 visuals ca n’t really hold up to the measure of 2021 , even when judged against the smaller budget games of today . Environments are often innocent , enemies repeat with great absolute frequency , and objectives can sometimes fade into the foggy mess of the background . It ’s just one of legion way whereStubbscan’t inhabit up to modern standard , which hurts the overall experience .

gratuitous to say , games have come a foresighted path since 2005 , and mechanics and systems seen as interesting in the past are downright untenable to a modern eye . Stubbs the Zombiewas criticized for a short campaign when it give up , but that is but not a job in the now . alternatively , there are sequences that seem to drag on on constantly with insistent combat and artificially inflate difficulty . Navigating the larger levels is thwarting due to unclear objective lens and a navigation marker that only shows up some of the time . The lack of   fiber upgrades , collectibles , and other side objectives also makeStubbs the Zombiefeel slight , and the threadbare story beats in each stage provide very little need to move from point to level .

The overall audio frequency ofStubbs the Zombiedeserves its own focal point , as there are few other games   currently useable that feature such a cacophony of sound cartridge clip and awkward silence . When Stubbs is alone , there is almost no audio , providing an eerie stillness to the supposedly bustling city . When Stubbs attacks civilians , the soundtrack jumps from drained quiet to a refrain of human scream , snake god moaning , a sampling of the ten lines of accompanying negotiation overlap with everything , and a sparge of random background audio recording from nearby buildings . Even when Stubbs is n’t actively attacking , his horde of followers can produce enough hearable human excruciation to make what is supposed to be a quirky sport time into something that ’s intemperate to listen to .

It ’s not fun to return to a rereleased game likeStubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulseand discover that it ’s trap in the past .   WhileStubbs the Zombiewas ahead of its timeback in the day , its 24-hour interval in the sunlight has long passed , and it ’s just really gruelling to go back to in an age with so many stellar new releases .   Those who played it in its meter will appreciate its way-out charms , but anyone number toStubbsfresh will   have to work hard to look across its date aspect . As it is , Stubbs and his shamble through a retro - future will live on only as a historical artifact of a unlike fourth dimension .
