Screen Rant reviewsStar Trek

Where to start ? ( This is go to be a retentive one , folks . If you want to bound off the preamble and get right to the critique itselfclick here . )

Some people areStar Warsfanatics , others go wacky overTransformersorX - Men . While I ’m a hugeIron Manfan , Star Trekis my rightful passion buy the farm back well over 30 old age . My favorite of all the shows ? The Original Series ( aka TOS ) . You may bet at it now and remember it looks cheesy ( however I highly recommend you check out the digitally remastered version with brand Modern visual effect on videodisk or Blu - ray ) , but think the originalStar Trekis over 40 years old .

Picard and Riker in season 1

At the time the other big Sci - Fi TV show was the tall mallow - fest calledLost in Space- so keep that in mind as a comparison . :-)

I haveStar Trekprop replica on my bookshelves ( some pretty damned nice ones ) along with a written matter of the originalStar Fleet Technical Manualby Franz Joseph and a set of blueprint of the original U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 ( which shew the location of a bowling alley on the ship ! ) . I ’ve memorized every episode of the original series - I can say you which one each one is within seconds of any of them starting . And I ’ve see every movie .

Yes , I ’m into Trek " canon " - tracking all the little particular that wed the wholeStar Trekuniverse together , however I ’m also aware ( though some fans seem to be in denial about this ) that over the course of hundreds of episodes across five different serial , Star Trekitself has violated its own canyon many times .

Collage of Captain Sisko, Captain Picard, Captain Kirk, and Captain Janeway from the Star Trek franchise.

Why am I telling you all this ? So you have some context of use for my review of J.J. Abrams ' , Roberto Orci ’s and Alex Kurtzman ’s reboot of theStar Trekuniverse . However this is not a review just for " Trekkies , " and that ’s appropriate because neither is this movie just for that grouping of die hard sports fan ( among which I admit myself ) .

Also , I did study the four part prequel comedian that say the story which leads to the outcome that take place in the film . If you have a opportunity I recommend you rule it and peck it up at your local comic book memory board as it really flesh out the " villain " in the film , Nero .

Some fans may disagree , but this franchise was in heroic need of a reboot , re - vision , fresh " take " or whatever you ’d like to call it . Star Trek , as a brand , was whithering on the vine and was in danger of being put on the shelf for who knows how long - until Paramount might make up one’s mind enough meter had run low by to give it another go . This was due to a identification number of factors , among which included the subsequent series being take in directions by Rick Berman ( and to some exent , Brannon Braga ) that the lover did not agree with . Essentially it was a fount of " the lover do n’t cognise what ’s good for them - we ’ll tell them what they want . "

Robin Curtis and Kirstie Alley as Lt. Saavik in Star Trek.

From this we derive the ignoble death of Captain Kirk in a transition movie with a stupidly imperfect plot equipment , Star Trek : Voyager , theLost in Spaceof Trek , progressively crappier movies and finallyEnterprise : At least anattemptat something sweet in Trek , which unfortunately went off in some half - assed management - and Manny Coto ’s travail to fetch the show back to what itshouldhave been in time of year 4 were too little , too late .

So … when it was announced that the novel celluloid would go back to before the original series crew had met I was both excited at the candidate and terrorize of how it might turn out . I have in mind we ’re talking about recasting iconic persona . Bill Shatner ? Leonard Nimoy ? DeForest Kelly and James Doohan ?

Sacrilege !

A promo photo from Star Trek 2009

But I attempt to be cautiously affirmative over the course of very former news , pre - product and through the production . I name this film as my most anticipated of the yr …

And I was NOT disappoint .

So lastly - the review …

Zach Quinto and Chris Pine in Star Trek review

J.J. Abrams' 2009 movie Star Trek rebooted the iconic sci-fi franchise in a totally new timeline. When a Romulan ship travels back in time and alters the past, the lives of James T. Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto), and the future crew of the USS Enterprise are drastically changed. In this new timeline, the Romulan Nero (Eric Bana) sets out for revenge on Spock, setting off a chain of events that reshape the entire universe.

come home here to carry on reading our Star Trek review article …

Star Trekopens with a " bang . " We see the U.S.S. Kelvin out in blank space and coincidentally ( considering the vastness of you know , the universe of discourse ) it comes upon a monstrous and very alien ballistic capsule . A battle forthwith commences , and if you ’ve seen any of the prevue or commercials you know that the ship is destroyed and most of the crew break loose - saved by James T. Kirk ’s father .

This scene is as close as buff of the original show will get to an for the most part unaltered but updated reading of the classic Trek epoch . The Kelvin has an odd configuration , but looks like just a more elaborate and slenderly updated interpretation of a ship from the original series . Couple of nits right off the at-bat : I did NOT like the spirit of the engineering deck . They looked like a cross between an industrial plant and an old underpass to me . The next thing was the fact that it was mentioned that there were 800 crewmembers on the ship . The original Enterprise , which was similar in size to the Kelvin held just over 400 bunch men and women .

Trek - geek nits apart , it was a thrilling opening to the film - I ’d almost dare say as much space natural action in that one scene as we ordinarily get in an entireStar Trekfilm , and shot in a much more dynamic style . And having Jim Kirk being have during the battle just before the dying of his father - it ’s a great scratch .

From there we cut to the intimate scene of a young Jim Kirk race a mid sixties Corvette ( a nod to the prison term period in which the original show aired ? ) . He ’s trouble and that ’s evidenced when we see him next as a young twenty - something trying to pick up Uhura in a bar and picking a fight with four Starfleet red - shirts ( and they ’re bruisers ) . His butt is finally kicked and Captain Pike ( played most famously by Bruce Greenwood ) gives Kirk ( Chris Pine ) a fatherly talk , win over him to enlist in Starfleet .

Across the quadrant we get to see Spock as a vernal boy for the first metre since an instalment back in the other seventies of the animated series . There ’s a great scene right here and I wo n’t spoil it a scrap for you . They picked a good actor to work Sarek , Spock ’s Father of the Church and we see Winona Ryder briefly as his mother . It was unusual seeing her at 37 - with laugh lines around her oculus and looking so much older than I remember .

Another cracking scene is the debut of Karl Urban as Dr. Leonard " Bones " McCoy . I assert Urban was channeling DeForest Kelly - he was just keen and a delight to learn on screen .

All of our well bed gang ends up on the newly construct NCC-1701 for its inaugural launching . The way Uhura become on the ship march her inner strength and fortitude and the way McCoy gets Kirk on the ship provides the one instant of slightly overly goofy temper in the film .

Of of course eventually they persist into Nero ( Eric Bana ) in his mutant - looking starship . One thing lead to another and Spock terminate up in charge of the ship much to Kirk ’s humiliation . It ’s shortly after this that we fulfil " old Spock " ( Leonard Nimoy , duh ) . Up until now it was n’t TOO much of a stretch as to how the gang was land together , but the meeting between Kirk and Spock was middling high on the coincidence metre .

Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy in the new Star Trek movie

I wo n’t get into much more of the secret plan , do it to say the overarching fib here is how the moral force between Kirk , McCoy and Spock first developed .

I ’d say that Abrams and gang did a pretty estimable job of creating a film that had the possibility of being a no - win post . Roberto Orci mention to me"the Kobayashi Maru - like nature of what we were attempting"in describing the project of creating a film that would appeal to both a new generation unfamiliar with the original series yet would satisfy long prison term devotee .

So what was n’t so good ? I retrieve that Anton Yelchin lay on the Russian accent way too thick as Chekov . There was a brief comedic minute early on where the computer could not understand what he was saying . I ’m desire in the next film they cut back on that a bit . There was also a romantic relationship in the motion picture ( I wo n’t say between who ) that candidly , felt draw and done just for the sake of the gimmick . There was also a reference to Commander Archer ( the Captain of the first spaceship Enterprise from the series of the same name ) that did n’t make sentiency to me based on the timeline between that series and this picture show ( yeah , pocket-size nit ) . I ’d say the major problem with the motion picture was that Eric Bana as Nero was lamentably developing - no doubt more a problem of the handwriting than his playacting .

A new look at the updated USS Enterprise NCC-1701

Even on the new endeavor , still the industrial look in engineering , seem as I described above plus maybe throw in a brewery for bang . It just did n’t mould for me .

And if you ’re a die hard Trekkie , be previse - there are a dyad of things that happen in this film that will probably make you very , very angry . But remember , it ’s an alternate timeline , so ANYTHING can happen .

Oh , and see a Nokia product positioning in a movie that ’s theorise to take station in the twenty-third one C ? rip me RIGHT out of the film for a moment .

So what was good ? I think that this is accessibleStar Trek- it will pull ( hopefully ) a non - Trekkie fanbase and transcend the " Trek is for geeks " stereotype of the dealership . There ’s little if any technobabble ( which really went off the scale duringThe Next Generation ) , the outer space battles and action mechanism scenes are far beyond what we ’ve hear in any previousStar Trekfilm , and the star of the film are pretty piquant .

And the ship - the highly debated ship … I eff there are haters out there - heck , I was one of them when I first saw it . But on the openhanded screen , it WORKS . For the most part it looked capital except for that damned level hotcake of a rearward end on the subaltern hull . And believe me , you ’re go to LOVE watch , hearing and yes , feeling the go-ahead go into and hail out of warping . They did a netherworld of a line of work with the Modern optical expression and the seat - vibrating audio force .

I love Simon Pegg ’s Scotty - younger than we saw on the show and a act more unbridled . Great hooey . Zachary Quinto took a mo getting used to as Spock , but in the end I thought he did a decent caper . The large question is Chris Pine : Did he pull off Kirk ?

I say , yes , he did .

He did n’t emulate Shatner in speech blueprint or mannerisms , but in mental attitude . He wasalmostthere through most of the moving picture , but I ’m here to tell you - the net scene , when he walk on the bridge finally wearing the Au adventitia … I in reality think " Damn , he IS Captain James T. Kirk . "

For the die hard fans there were ton of nod to previous films and the TV serial . I ’m quite sure I only caught a fraction of them but here are the few that I can retrieve :

I jazz there was a tribble in there somewhere , but I miss it . :-)

I palpate like I rambled a mo but as a fan who ’s been really looking forward to this there was a sight to take in . I would have prefer a 2nd viewing before reviewing the film , but one will have to do .

Was it perfect ? No . Will it gratify hard meat , no - deviation - from - canon fan ? dubious . But overall I ’m VERY happy with this rebirth ofStar Trekand I hope it makes enough money to undertake a continuation , in which we ’ll get to see the crew officiate as a well - inunct motorcar .
