There is a lot to like about Jeff Baena’sSpin Me Round , which he co - wrote with Alison Brie — namely , the mold is fantastic , the comedy a bit unsettling and dark , and the pacing never slows enough to become obtuse . However , away from the assembled mold , which include Aubrey Plaza and Molly Shannon , Spin Me Roundloses track of its assumption in a bid to give the hearing some shortly - lived thrills and intrigue that ultimately do n’t amount to much .
Amber ( Brie ) is a restaurant manager at Tuscan Grove . She ’s been there for nine years and is offered the chance of a life when she ’s take by her boss ( Lil Rel Howery ) and take into an all - expense paid manager ’s retreat plan in Italy . Her group is made up of eccentric characters , including Zach Woods , Molly Shannon , Debby Ryan , and Ayden Mayeri , as they all render to navigate the stumble that becomes exceedingly unusual and uncomfortable the longer they ’re there . When Amber is singled out to have one - on - one outings with Tuscan Grove ’s CEO Nick Martucci ( Alessandro Nivola ) , she ’s thrilled , believing she may find romance on this head trip after all . However , as her relationship with Kat ( Aubrey Plaza ) , Nick ’s assistant , becomes complicated and people start disappearing abruptly , Amber clear that nothing is as it seems and her programme for a squeamish vacation pickup speedily go awry .

Spin Me Roundtries to maintain its condition as a comedy , but it also veers into mystery - thriller district . While sure eerie and creepy aspects of the plot are meant to confound spectator ( and Amber ) off , the film terminate up spiraling because it ca n’t keep its balance while juggle various genres and storytelling avenues . It often feels like the film is n’t quite so indisputable what it wants to be and that weakens a lot of the initial excitement and fascinate the story has to offer . like to Amber ’s feel throughout , the film take a shit it unclear whetherthe audience should laughor remain at the sharpness of their seat in suspense of what may or may not come about next . To that end , Spin Me Roundcertainly sends a lot of mixed messages and struggles to find its terms , leading to an finish that does n’t quite amount to much for its leading character beyond a weird trip she would presently rather forget .
As the cinema goes on , audiences may begin to wonder what exactly is the point of it all . Amber is seemingly stuck at her occupation and in her life history . This would typically be follow by some sort of personal arc , but that does n’t really fall out here . Amber does n’t really take the air aside any wiser by the end — that is , aside from her anticipation of a fun trip being completely shattered . Amber seems quite lost after a spoilt break - up and inclination into the attention she acquire from Nick , but it does n’t go anywhere significant . A few heated moments and dangerous undertaking with Kat do n’t amount to much , either , withPlaza ’s characterdisappearing at one full stop in the film , never to return .
When the tout ensemble is together , Spin Me Roundseems to get some momentum and laughs , leaning on the comedic cast to deliver — and they do . When the film eases into the sticky witticism , it ’s genuinely funny . But the casting itself ( and their comedic timing ) can not deliver a struggling narrative , which can be quite fun and ludicrous if the film had exert a steady tone throughout . As it stands , however , Spin Me Roundis all over the plaza and even its practiced moments ca n’t be save due to a woolly storyline and deficiency of character developing .
