Sky Captain is a visually intriguing tribute to serial movies of the 40’s and 50’s, but in the end it’s just a pretty good popcorn flick.
Once again it has been proven that dawdler can be misleading . Back in July ( in the prior link ) I state my thought thatSky Captain and the World of Tomorrowlooked like it might be really fantastic . I am ashamed to admit that I even mentionedLord of the Ringswithin the same post …
Sky Captainisn’t abadmovie , it ’s just not agreatone .
The film opens aboard a Graf Zeppelin ( the Hindenburg III ) , preparing to dock atop the Empire State Building , and is photographed in such an unusual way that it took some time for my brain to adjust to what my center were seeing . The colors were very muted , and there was a softer focus than I ’ve ever seen onscreen ( and that’sincludingshots of Barbara Walters during her interview ) . It was actually a bit distracting , and to deepen the confusion the view was spoken in German with subtitles translate .
It would have been better to have give the celluloid with some sort of introductory scene which allowed us to take in the visual style of the film and get used to it before moving on with the story . Perhaps along the billet of the opening sequence in any James Bond celluloid .
Having said all that , at least initially the visuals are mesmerizing and if you are a sports fan of classic film of the 40 ’s it will give you a strong , fuzzy belief of nostalgia . I really felt transported to another time , not only through the visuals but the acting style and the tempo . The down side of that is that yesterday ’s tempo can seem a bit slow by today ’s standards . Films are usually edited a bit crocked these days and one gets used to that .
The story adopt Polly Perkins ( Gwyneth Paltrow ) , a gamy newsprint reporter / lensman who comes across information which will give her a " scoop " as to why a number of salient scientist are being toss off one by one . The last surviving scientist contacts her , leaving her with blueprints for what wait like a robot , along with the cabalistic name " Dr. Totenkopf " as the human race behind it all . Immediately after this giant robots assail New York City , and her newshound instincts overrule any thoughts of personal safety as she places herself directly in the route of the mechanical monster so she can get a great photograph .
The police are ineffective against the behemoth , so a call expire out to " Sky Captain " ( Jude Law ): apparently a " Buck Rogers on solid ground " eccentric of guy who is called in when all else neglect . Some deft flight acquisition are demonstrated as he tries everything he can to bring these thing down , and in the process of course he keep Polly from being break down to death . If you ’re a movie buff you ’ll detect all sorts of nod to heavy photographic film , as in this vista where the laser ray of light shooting out of the robots eye sound quite a fleck like the Martian death light beam fromWar of the Worlds .
It turns out that Sky Captain ( aka Joe , a good , solid all - American name from old war movies if I ever heard one ) and Polly have a bumpy romantic story . Unfortunately for him , she has information that he demand to help find this subtle Totenkopf , and she refuses to help unless she can accompany him and get an exclusive . We also receive Joe ’s sidekick scientist / discoverer buddy Dex ( Giovanni Ribisi , play the most thinking character I ’ve seen him act to particular date ) . Another interesting decision was to apply archival footage of Laurence Olivier as Totenkopf .
More attempt and the journey to locate Totenkopf ensue , with rafts of witty repartee between Joe and Polly . We finally meet " Frankie " , an old partner of Joe ’s who assist them considerably in a serial of exciting scenes . Frankie is work by Angelina Jolie , who mellow out into the function very nicely . I ’m not a huge buff of Jolie ( by a longshot ) but she was perfect for this exceptional purpose of a veteran commander with a juiceless , guileful sense of sense of humor .
I really appreciated that another tip of the hat to old films was how the film had no offensive nomenclature or blatant sexual innuendo , except for one picture where a comment was made concerning nipples getting hard in stale conditions . My first idea was " What the heck was THAT all about ? " as it did not fit in the movie at all and it seemed like one of those lines stuck in after the fact by some snickering " Beavis and Butthead " mentality exec .
The last plan turns out to be a bit dizzy as far as I ’m relate , but it puddle for some peachy scenes towards the end of the film , with more homages pay toStar Warsand all those old sci fi movies that used those slick tripod finned spaceship .
This was Kerry Conran ’s directorialandwriting debut , so it ’s no surprise that this was not better . He initially expend four class pass water basically the first six minute of this film , and when he register that to producer John Avnet he was given the green light to complete it . Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrowisimpressive visually , specially considering that all the lot are CG , but it does n’t have the clout needed to knock you out of your fanny .
On a side distinction : As I sit in the dramatic art I kept call back how groovy it would be if Peter Jackson ( writer / director of theLord of the Ringstrilogy ) applied a standardised face to his upcoming remake ofKing Kong .
Sky Captainis definitely deserving watch over once , but it ’s not the eccentric of motion picture that warranty duplicate watch .
