It makes for a jarring scout , one that is bog down in familiar story beats that never quite come together authentically or sincerely yours enough for viewers to become full invest in Raylene ’s journey . And it ’s a shame because the film has all the making of a heartfelt and paying attention story about ego - discovery and learning to screw oneself , but it never full embraces these themes or domiciliation any deeper to sympathize Raylene beyond the control surface of her issues .
Of course , severely Reddoes have appealing moment — Raylene’sonstage turn as Dolly Partonare worthwhile and fun , as is her camaraderie with Teeth and Wilson ( Cannavale is so aloof it ’s entertain to look on ) . The execution factor alone is fantastic and piquant . Boylan ’s own performance is convincing and occasionally even excited , but her playacting talents unluckily ca n’t overcome the issues that staunch from the writing .
