Senior Year
Directed by Alex Hardcastle from a screenplay by Andrew Knauer , Arthur Pielli , and Brandon Scott Jones , Senior Yeartells a familiar level . While it attempts to incorporate elements of classic pic from the late nineties and early goose egg , the Netflix comedy fail to capture any magic with a lusterless script that could have used a lot more heart . The film is filled with nostalgia , but does n’t use it to decently amplify its own story . The lead character , human relationship dynamics and premise are surface - stratum and , despite a few suspect moments , Senior Yearnever lives up to its electric potential .
Stephanie Conway ( Angourie Rice ) is not cool or popular . To prevent herself from ever being made fun of or derogate again in front of her peer by hateful daughter Tiffany ( Ana Yi Puig and played by Zoë Chao as an adult ) , Stephanie vow to become democratic . By her senior year , Stephanie is not only cheerleading captain , but she ’s date Blaine ( Tyler Barnhardt andplayed by Justin Hartley as an adult ) , the most pop boy at Harding High , and is on track to come through prom queen . unluckily , her dreams are never understand after a cheerleading stroke lands her in a 20 - year comatoseness . waken up at 37 , Stephanie ( now played by Rebel Wilson ) is shocked to realize she ’s been unconscious for so long . Not wasting any time , Stephanie reconnects with her quondam friends Martha ( Mary Holland ) , now gamy school principal sum , and Seth ( Sam Richardson ) , and decide to go back to eminent school in a bid to succeed prom queen . The only issue is the rules have change since 2002 and Stephanie has to keep up if she want triumph .

fourth-year Yearplays like a gimcrack clone ofNever Been Kissed . It ’s so focussed on being cunning and quirky , but it ’s so disingenuous that it never grows a personality of its own . Perhaps the film ’s large blunder is its want of heart . Nothing Stephanie does feels like it ’s heartfelt , even when she realizes she ’s been pore on the wrong thing for far too longsighted . Caught up in the need to be pop and being crown prom queen , Stephanie very rarely has a moment to internalize and think on what she is doing . It ’s because the motion-picture show can never convey its agonist out of the superficial goal she strives for that the story remains as one - dimensional as she is .
Comedies can be silly and sometimes even nonsensical , butSenior Yearfeels like a complete waste of time . Yes , there are hint of the potential of what this photographic film could be . An example is when Stephanie recalls a touching retention between her and her tardy mother . regrettably , the brief moments do n’t last very long , overshadow only by the premiss that never right build any real tension or interest . Stephanie skates along and there ’s a sense the pic is more watch up withappealing to millennial nostalgiathan it is catering to its own story and character dynamics . A sequence feature Wilson and her costars reenacting Britney Spears ' medicine video recording for " ( You get Me ) Crazy " is fun , but wholly unneeded and distracting .
The excessive nostalgia for the 1990s and early aught is a reserve for a layered story that could have been so much more than it is .
