It was hardly the first time his name had come up in sexual congress to contention , but it was the sway big enough to have a ripple effect throughout his administration . But , rather than focusing on Ford ’s bombastic personality and fall from grace , writer - director Ricky Tollman ’s debut feature centers on those in smaller positions working in a variety of industry around him . Whether they ’re eager to discover this massive narration or to adjudicate and keep it carry , the effort transude by each party far outweighs Ford ’s cataclysmal nature , even if his mien tower heavily over the narration . Run This Townfalls short of its storytelling aspirations but finds achiever in Ben Platt and Mena Massoud , who run with lively , ravish DOE .
incline This Town ’s narrative is mainly focused on Kamal ( Massoud ) , a political aide to Ford , and Bram ( Platt ) , a late - graduate news media major with a hunger to break his first big news report . The two live solely dissimilar life history , but deal one vulgar goal of climbing the respective ladders at their institution . What assist bring in these marvellous performances to life is Tollman ’s dashing handwriting , which is reminiscent of Aaron Sorkin ’s tight - step and exceptionally witty flair . However , his feature does n’t quite come to its pace with these two characters until its final act . The first half of the film introduces the looker to a bit of unlike characters , some of which are memorable and others that should ’ve been exit on the cutting elbow room floor . When it comes to the former , Damian Lewis and Jennifer Ehle are exceptional as the disgraced Ford and Bram ’s cagey editor Judith , respectively ( peculiarly Lewis , even if the fat courtship he ’s fag is less - than - convincing ) . But the straight standout of the supporting cast is Nina Dobrev as Ashley , an supporter to Ford , whose captivating execution merit far more clip on blind than was given . Her interaction with Kamal are fabulously fun to look out play out , and it would have been great to see more of that .
The entire cast blends improbably well together to make for a hard understructure in Tollman ’s characteristic , but jerky editing - combined with odd storytelling - is whereRun This Townmeets its unfortunate downfall . There are plenty of times when the film ’s editing is all over the place , with plan trumping over cohesiveness . on occasion , this even makes the film a little hard to watch . Despite this , Run This Townstill finds a way to stay on electrifying and keep the audience enthrone , mainly through its superb molding . It takes a while to reach this spot , as the picture ’s first act sets some ambitious standards that it ca n’t quite reach , but when it hits its gull , it make it hard .
finally , scat This Townfinds its pace , but the length in which it takes to get there is the greatest geological fault in Tollman ’s film . There ’s no dubiousness that he ’s passionate about filmmaking and politics , as that personal magnetism and fervor radiate through each scene and within his Sorkin - esque script , but the uneven pacing and high standards for this narration set the stripe a little too high for what the end result winded up being . gratefully , both Platt and Massoud shine in their respective role . They take the character that Tollman wrote and make them superimposed , complex , and transport to the viewer .
in the end , Tollman ’s unveiling feature may not have been utter , but it certainly solidified him as a passionate filmmaker with something to say . Shifting the focus from Ford ’s controversial tape to the people that really attempted to do something about it was a fresh perspective that provide an interesting insight into the determination of the " little guys" . Run This Townsucceeds with its astonishing cast , and gratefully , they ’re just enough to keep it afloat .
