Ricki and the Flash
Ricki and the Flashis a half-baked comedy/drama, but the cast (including Meryl Streep’s aging rocker) makes it a charming one.
Ricki and the Flashstars Meryl Streep as ' Ricki Rendazzo ' , an older player who long ago gave up on her house life-time in the spare-time activity of rock n ' curlicue stardom ; now , Ricki spends her nights performing for a small , though fast , bunch at a California saloon with her circle , The Flash . When Ricki ’s ex - husband Pete ( Kevin Kline ) need for her help caring for their daughter Julie ( Mamie Gummer ) - who suffered a breakdown after being dumped and divorced by her husband - Ricki agree and makes the farsighted journey across the country to Indianapolis , to see the kinsfolk she left behind .
Ricki thereafter easy , but sure as shooting , begins to rekindles ties with Julie and Pete likewise , though even more awkwardness ensues when she reunites with her two grown sons , Joshua ( Sebastian Stan ) and Adam ( Nick Westrate ) - as well as Pete ’s wife , Maureen ( Audra McDonald ) . However , with boost from her bandmate and would - be lover Greg ( Rick Springfield ) , Ricki refuses to give up on this 2d luck to make things correct with her children .
Ricki and the Flashwas penned by Diablo Cody , who break out ( and earned an Oscar ) for herJunoscreenplay in 2007 , though response to her screenwriting employment since then ( on such films asJennifer ’s BodyandYoung Adult ) have certainly been more disputative . Cody ’s narrator phonation hail through strongly inRicki , imbuing the film with moment of earnest inherited play as well as savvy cultural observance ; where both Cody andRicki ’s Oscar - acquire director Jonathan Demme ( The secretiveness of the Lambs , Beloved ) fall short is with their presentation of the film ’s themes and ideas . It ’s fair to think ofRicki and the Flashas the less refined relation of Cody’sJunoand Demme’sRachel Getting Married .
The Ricki quality is a refreshingly messy and multi - faceted protagonist ( thanks to a combining of Cody ’s writing and Meryl Streep ’s carrying into action ) , but the movie ’s other character experience short - deepen , in terminus of their ontogenesis . There ’s not a debile link in the range ofRicki and the Flash ’s cast as far as their acting is have-to doe with , but most of their roles are n’t provided enough deepness to amount to more than relatable , yet at the same time conversant ( translation : stereotypical ) pilot . Cody ’s screenplay also touches upon a turn of worthwhile issues ( about family , woman ’s vocation choices , and so off ) , but be given to do so through heavy - handed dialogue more than comparatively subtle storytelling techniques . As mentioned before , the trouble is the presentation , not the meat .
Demme ’s direction onRicki and the Flashdoes serve to polish out some of the wrinkles in the script . Visually , Demme and cinematographer Declan Quinn ( entrance fee ) cautiously distinguish Ricki and her fellow dreary - shoe collar types ' man ( which is filmed with hand-held and more naturalistic camera move ) from the hip white - collar world of her family ( which is more carefully cast and polished in terms of filming elan ) , while drawing out solid performance from the cast of characters . At the same time , Demme is guilty of over - playing the film ’s cultural clash clowning , relying on sitcom - esque cutaways to reaction shots of looker-on being offend by Ricki and her improper manner ; the same goes for the picture show ’s pa - culture commentary ( targeting subject pasture from modern airport regulations to selfies ) , which tends to be fishy yet ham - fisted .
Streep , to no surprise , does unattackable work here , bring worked up exercising weight ( as well as some solid substantial - spirit singing and guitar - performing ) to the Ricki character , making her a memorable protagonist and the pic ’s high spot . Streep ’s scenes with Ricky Springfield also crackle , as the doer / instrumentalist brings emotional authenticity to his function ( even when delivering on - the - nose dialog ) , and he enjoys a relaxed onscreen romantic interpersonal chemistry with Streep . The pair deliver a number of rousing renditions of popular Song - oldandnew - with their band ( enough thatRicki and the Flashresembles a nickelodeon musical at some points ) , including the recent Rick ' Rick the Bass Player ' Rousa . However , those same musical sequences are a double - edge brand , as they do take by time that could ’ve been used for more patch / thematic development .
Meanwhile , Streep and Mamie Gummer ( Streep ’s real - life daughter ) have a jolly naturalistic concealment chemistry , even while they ’re playing a female parent - daughter couple that ’s very different from themselves . Gummer also settles nicely into an emotionally raw bout as Julie , a character whose breakdown has top her to being completely indifferent towards social norms and willing to speak the uncomfortable truths that everyone else dances around . If Julie ( and her longtime emotional problem ) was give a bit more developing , she would be as good a part asRicki and the Flash ’s namesake .
Ricki ’s other children are n’t given as much developing or screen time as Julie , but actor Sebastian Stan ( Captain America : The Winter Soldier ) and Nick Westrate ( Turn ) deliver veritable performances all the same . Similarly , Kevin Kline ( Last Vegas ) and Audra McDonald ( Private Practice ) lend credibility to their respective roles , brining some emotional weight to quality with basic Type - A personality - the firmly - working , but nice , ex - husband and the supportive , well - composed , stepmother who ’s never gotten her due recognition from Ricki - and making the most of their screen time with Streep , in particular .
Ricki and the Flashis a half - baked drollery / drama , but the cast ( including Meryl Streep ’s mature cradle ) makes it a charming one . In many ways , Ricki(the film ) resemble its namesake ; both are mussy and uncanny in ways admirable and flurry alike , yet they ’re so open and unapologetic about what they are that it ’s difficult not to care them - at least a little , anyway . The movie is n’t a must - see in dramatics , but for those of you who are die - hard fans of Meryl Streep , there ’s enough to revalue here that you may enjoy catch her melodious melodrama on the great screen , flaws and all .
