Poser
What perennially online person in this daylight and age has n’t thought , at least once , of starting a podcast , regardless of whether they in reality have something to say ? Enter Lennon Gates ( Sylvie Mix ) , who may actually have some thoughts deserving place on the record at the beginning ofPoser . But , as the movie unfolds , progressively complicated bed are revealed , both aboutPoser ’s protagonist and the irony - laden malaise that permeates the local scene through which she moves like a ghost . However , some of these layers may be missed . Poseris an unfocused but piercing send - up of the vernal search for identity , taking aim at podcasts , indie music culture , distaff friendships , and fixation . While it ultimately reveals everything too late , the film still feels fresh and , unlike plenty of what is released today ( on podcasts and in theatre ) , actually does have something to say .
Lennon Gates lives in Columbus , Ohio and something seems wrong with her at the start of the photographic film . Spurred by her involvement in the local music scene , Lennon initiate a podcast where she attends surreptitious shows and interviews local creative person . Through this endeavor , Lennon meets Bobbi Kitten , playing a version of herself as the lead singer of the band Damn the Witch Siren . The yoke attain up a friendly relationship , with Lennon increasingly fascinated by Bobbi ’s uninhibited nature and inspired to make her own music . What lead off as an innocent enough project slowly becomes something that jeopardize to unravel Lennon ’s entire liveliness .

As a character , Lennon is an riddle and while this certainly seems to be on use , it does n’t give the hearing much to latch onto in the first thirty or so minutes of the motion-picture show . Her naïveté is on full display ( twice she uproariously use Google to search " how to protrude a podcast " and " what is operation nontextual matter ? " ) and this sure enough works to endear her to viewers , especially those who will find it funny that she ’s starting a podcast in the first place . Writer - film director Noah Dixon and co - author Ori Segev are constantly wink at the audience , get it on full well the level of pretense on display . One of the jape - out - loud minute of this drily rum film is a collage of artists who add up up with outlandish responses as to their melodious musical genre when being interview . Some examples : " faggot death pop music , " data-based indie and pa , " I judge I ’d just be alternative , " and " Junkyard Bop or Family Band . Like if your really unusual relation was a band . "
Despite this , though , there ’s a earnestness to Lennon that makes trusted she , or the artists , are never the butt of the joke , even when Lennon finds herself forming a new friendship with Bobbi . Bobbi is everything Lennon is not ( and maybe want to be ) as the lead singer of a poppy but razor - sharp dance orchestra with a bandmate who never take off a brassy and terrifying Halloween wolf masquerade party . There ’s also a dear for the local Columbus aspect and music in cosmopolitan that shines through inPoser , most notably with its leading soundtrack ( some of which is supply by Bobbi ’s own band ) .
With all its attending to the medicine panorama and Lennon ’s relationship with Bobbi , which almost becomesSingle White Female - esque in its obsession , Poserloses the secret plan a act . Its sudden escalation into psychodrama in its latter one-half feel tonally off from what came before it and a fluid transition from one point to another could ’ve done wonders for the pacing and air of an otherwise sharp movie . The conclusion pack a lick , but it would ’ve leave a contusion if the groundwork had been laid earlier . Luckily , Poserdoes some of that work visually , with the camerawork and lighting subtly unsettling . The orange gleam lighting the streets of Columbus underscores the suburban ennui of Lennon that stand in everlasting contrast to the " go get ‘em " nature of the artists she interview .
There ’s a quietness toPoserthat feels antithetic to the noisiness of the world it is portraying , but it ’s in this tautness where the film resides . It ’s also in this clamor wherePosergets a slight lost . But thanks to Mix ’s convinced lead performance as Lennon , the movie manage to stay the course , even when it make unexpected points that seem abrupt until they ’ve had prison term to take root . Poseris most comfortable in this liminal outer space , which is what helps promote what could have otherwise been a disjointed effort to something reaching towards wideness .
