base on howPoseidon , the remaking of the 1972 catastrophe - film classicThe Poseidon Adventureis doing at the box situation , I ’d say that most people are going to agree with my followup . I ’ll only pertain in brief on the sickness that the innovation of yet another movie remake fetch to me , and here , once again with near reason .
For those of you young ' UN , The Poseidon Adventurewas released way back in 1972 , and it was one in a string of very successful disaster - themed film give rise by Irwin Allen . It starred Gene Hackman in his prime and a smattering of other actors who were popular at the time , include Ernest Borgnine , Stella Stevens and Shelley Winters . The plot was round-eyed : Rogue wafture flips ocean liner and a small group of folks seek to survive by making their elbow room to the bottom ( now top ) of the ship , skip to be rescued .
So today we have Wolfgang Petersen ’s version of this same chronicle . Now do n’t get me awry , I ’ve enjoy his study in the yesteryear ( with the exception of his most late film prior to this : Troy ) . Here again , I have to say that this just was not very good . Sure , it had a few moments that were fairly nail-biting , but I almost assign that to the personal phobia that I get to this view : fear of drowning . Any suspense was not related to the characters specifically , since I really did n’t wish much what happen to them .
Wolfgang Petersen also didThe Perfect Storm , which I rather enjoyed , so one might call up that another sea - related moving picture might be in good order up his skittle alley and turn out rather well . Unfortunately , this was not the case , with a moving-picture show that had fictional character that were not very fleshed out and that I really did n’t like about . And call it personal bias , but having the non - received intimate orientation of one of the characters boast so conspicuously and in my face did n’t set well with me , either .
I also find out it amusing that other 2006 twists to the character included substitute a single momma and her boy for the older baby and untried brother from the original , and an ex - Navy professional poker actor for the conflicted non-Christian priest of the ' 72 version . The only character that connected at all was Robert Ramsey , play by Kurt Russel , as the ex - firefighter and mayor of New York City . Russell always manages to wreak something comfortable to a execution , whether he ’s bring Snake Plissken or a cracker .
The other thing that pester me about the celluloid was how fell it come across in terms of the death of the passengers . For a PG-13 cinema I encounter it kind of worrisome . Both in regards to the numb bodies and the portrayal of hoi polloi being kill . They really could have dial it down a notch or two and not mislay anything in my opinion .
As I stated above , there were some intestine - cruncher moment in the film , but again , it was n’t related to any fondness for any particular fiber . The orginal version , although perhaps pretty hokey by today ’s standards , managed to make me care a lot more about each character and their deaths evoked a lot more sadness than here , where my thought was " Oh well , one more dead guy / gal . " Even with the famous picture from the original , where as our intrepid crew has just climb out of the dance hall and the flood starts come in , I felt something for those who did n’t make it . Here , the style the moving picture was edited , we fall out our escapees for about 10 or 15 minutes , forgetting about the ballroom folk music , when abruptly we ’re taken back there just in clip to see them all kill . Not near as effective as in the first cinema , where Hackman was looking down at them all with a common sense of helplessness because there just was n’t anything he could do .
One setting I did notice in particular effective was when one of the characters drowns in an effort to save the others . From what I ’ve show elsewhere , it was probably the most realistic ( and disturbing ) portrait of drown I ’ve ever seen . That one stuck with me for a while .
At the death , I did n’t feel any gumption of elation for those rescued , although they seemed to be jolly darned felicitous about it and did n’t seem to give any thought to those that were allow for behind or that sacrifice themselves so they might exist .
Do yourself a favour , skip this one and just rent the original .
