There is a mountain to like aboutNude Tuesday . It ’s genuinely funny , uncanny , and from time to time insightful . But perhaps the most interesting affair about the film — direct by Armağan Ballantyne from a screenplay by Jackie van Beek , who also stars — is that it ’s entirely in gibberish . Nude Tuesdayis incredibly entertaining and , though the key premise starts to wane after a while , the story find fault back up as it nears its remnant .
put on the fictional island of Zǿbftąņ , Nude Tuesdayfollows Laura ( van Beek ) and her married man Bruno ( Damon Herriman ) , a hapless duo whose marriage ceremony has been stale for a long time . From the offset it ’s obvious there is a distance between them ; Laura avoid ( and is frustrated with ) Bruno , while he prove too hard to keep the spark alive somehow with all the false cheer of someone being force to look happy . Simply put , they ’re suffering , their wedlock functioning only because it ’s more or less on automatic pilot . For their anniversary dinner , Bruno ’s mother gifts them with a paid trip to a new - age couples retreat , led by the always turned on Bjorg ( Jemaine Clement ) . In a bid to salvage their wedding , Laura and Bruno drive up to the retreat which , despite their initial hesitance , allows them to finally face some of their issues .

There are no lovey dovey situations or moments that feel disingenuous to Laura and Bruno ’s established ( and prickly ) relationship . What ’s more , the finale does n’t bring them back together despite conversation and realizations on both front , subverting expectations of a quick fix hideaway that is typically meant to heal their marital issues . Hilariously , the film is subtitled , but it ’s comfortable to follow regardless — namely , because it ’s in gibber so it does n’t much weigh , but also because the actors are so expressive in their dead body lyric and faces . Laura and Bruno ’s kinship is tense and the hideaway seduce it simultaneously better and worse .
Bjorg ’s mien only complicates issue and Clement is perfect as the sex guru . Van Beek and Herriman shine as the expressive and intensely defeated couple , bringing the film together as they move through one unfounded instant to the next . All that tell , Nude Tuesdaydrags a minute at the Battle of Midway point , content to have the zany shenanigans do most of the talking . But the retirement ’s unlawful methods and surprise can only go on for so long before it starts to wear on viewing audience . For a while , it seems like the film gets a turn stuck and the pacing is thrown off before picking back up again .
The event at the retreat do lead to a self-colored conclusion , though , one that includes the titulary Nude Tuesday and all that it encompasses . Regardless of the midway depression , Ballantyne ’s film is a good sentence . The actor ’s comedic timing is great and the things they get up to are comical and absurd . audience will find themselves draw into the uninhibited second , the maladroitness Laura and Bruno feel at first before finally letting go of their own arriere pensee and the feelings they ’ve keep so close-fitting to their heart . Ultimately , Nude Tuesdaymakes for an engaging , interesting film that experiments with a fake language , all while maintain the emotions of the character as real ( and pathetic ) as possible .
