Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again

For Mamma Mia! fans, Here We Go Again! offers a jubilant return to the unapologetically silly world of the original ABBA stage musical-turned movie.

TheMamma Mia!film sequelMamma Mia ! Here We Go Againrecaptures   much of its predecessor ’s adorkable charm , despite having taken a decade to amount together . While it ’s no   surprisal   that a secondMamma Mia!film ultimately got made ( the first one   grossed $ 616 million worldwide , after all ) , what is unexpected in its   strain . Taking a leaf fromThe Godfather : Part II ’s book of all sources , Here We Go Again!presents two parallel stories : one that ’s set in 1979 and follows co - protagonist Donna as a young charwoman , the other set five year after the firstMamma Mia!and centered on Donna ’s now 25 - year old girl , Sophie .   By and magnanimous , however , this approach works .   ForMamma Mia!fans , Here We Go Again!offers a jubilant return to the unapologetically silly world of the original ABBA point musical - turned moving picture .

In the flick ’s present timeline , Sophie ( Amanda Seyfried ) is preparing to re - open her female parent ’s villa on the Greek island of Kalokairi , a year after Donna ( Meryl Streep ) passed away . However , Sophie ’s desire to ride out on the island creates tension between her and her husband Sky ( Dominic Cooper ) , who is far from sell on the thought . When a tempest menace to jump her program completely , Sophie sputter to not give up , even with sustenance from   her mom ’s old pals Rosie ( Julie Walters ) and Tanya ( Christine Baranski ) , and one of her three papa , Sam ( Pierce Brosnan ) .

Meanwhile , back in the ' 70s ,   youthful Donna ( Lily James ) is fresh out of schooling and quick for an adventure , as are   her protagonist and fellow   members of The   Dynamos , Rosie ( Alexa Davies ) and Tanya ( Jessica Keenan Wynn ) . Donna thus decides to put out a journey to Greece - one that lead her to a ramshackle villa , which she mold   a connection   to and envisions as being something more . Along the way , however , Donna   also spoil paths with three young man   who are inextricably linked to her fate :   Harry ( Hugh Skinner ) , Bill ( Josh Dylan ) , and Sam ( Jeremy Irvine ) .

Directed by Ol Parker ( Imagine Me & You),Here We Go Againis a nickelodeon musical in the same vein as the firstMamma Mia ! , and carry   over some of that film ’s more democratic ABBA songs ( like " Dancing Queen " and , course , " Mamma Mia " ) . Thankfully , the vast majority of the sequel ’s musical numbers game are based on ABBA melody that were n’t have in its forerunner and give rise to some creatively - staged vocal and dance sequences , under Parker ’s supervision . Here We Go Again ’s effective melodious hardening pieces ( like " One of Us " and " Waterloo " ) similarly benefit from the cinematography by Wes Anderson ’s frequent collaborator Robert D. Yeoman , who shoot everything in a blank way and string from a bright color palette to keep the proceeding feel bubbly and chipper . Though sure melodious turn are noticeably better in their carrying out and camerawork than others , theMamma Mia!sequel mostly delivers the good , as far as musical spectacle is concerned .

However , as one   might bear , the actual   history here   - which Parker shares credit for penning   with Richard Curtis ( About Time ) andMamma Mia!writer Catherine Johnson - is rather   flimsy . To be fair , there are for certain times   where   the film effectively juxtapose Sophie ’s difficultness with young Donna ’s   endeavour to   cypher out where she ’s going in her life , in part   by cross - cutting smoothly between the two storylines . Problem is , on the whole there ’s just not a whole stack to   either game train of thought , either in terms of conflict or thematic nitty-gritty . The ' 70s - base through - line   also fails to reveal anything significant about Donna ’s past that the firstMamma Mia!hadn’t already established , at the same meter that it retcons certain prospect of   the first movie in gawky manner .   Still , as fluffy asHere We Go Again ’s narrative is , the moving-picture show deserves quotation for not merely re - hashing its forerunner ’s plot ( as continuation are often guilty of doing ) and making an genuine exertion to expand upon it .

Of naturally , much   of the sport of theMamma Mia!sequel comes from seeing the old gang back together singing and dance , including Colin Firth and   Stellan Skarsgård as the old versions of Harry and Bill . Like in the first movie , the mould is more than uncoerced to be as goofy and playful as the song lyrics and terpsichore stage dancing here call on them to be . The returning players alike slide   easily back into their former purpose and their give-and-take is all the more tardily - release and pleasurable for it . In many way of life , theMamma Mia!franchise ’s greatest posture is its cast ’s willingness to be as dorky and ridiculous as this heightened reality of this melodic universe calls for . Indeed , that’sHere We Go Again ’s   saving goodwill as much , if not more , than any other expression of the celluloid .

James as vernal Donna palpate right at home in theMamma Mia!series for related reasons . In many fashion , her industrious   performance suppliesHere We Go Againwith its drubbing heart , as do her ( largely successful ) effort to canalise Streep ’s physical mannerisms as the character . Young   Harry , Bill , and Sam are not quite on the same layer as James ' turn as Donna , but for the most elbow room they are credible enough as 20 - something versions of their respective A - inclination counterparts . Other new additions here include Andy Garcia as the mysterious yet suave   Fernando , the handler of Sophie ’s re - opened Pancho Villa ( the Hotel Bella Donna ) , and Cher as Sophie ’s big showbiz grandmother , Rubie . Both characters are pretty   cartoonish and   the flight of their spark   is clearly telegraphed early one , but are absolutely risible   at the same time .

On the whole , Here We Go Againoffers as much ( if not more ) cheesy entertainment   and escapist fun as the firstMamma Mia!film . It wo n’t convert anyone to the shrine of ABBA and those who found the original   moving picture musical to be verbose and decrepit might not   care much for the sequel , butHere We Go Again(wisely ) never bothers   to try out and branch out the prayer of theMamma Mia!brand in that sense , either .   Those who are so inclined are thus apprize to go   spend another two hours watch what ( essentially ) come to celebrities do karaoke in scenic Greece . And of course , this being a sequel that ’s arriving in theaters   in 2018 , do n’t leave beforeHere We Go Again ’s end credits are totally done rolling .
