Screen Rant ’s Vic Holtreman reviewsLimitless
Limitlesswasn’tquitewhat I expected - but that ’s hunky-dory . in reality I ’m not sure what I was expecting , but what I got was more of a popcorn moving-picture show than a " serious " action motion-picture show - and there ’s nothing amiss with that .
The roguishly better-looking Bradley Cooper plays Eddie Morra , a self - proclaimed writer who has yet to , you know … actually save anything . He ’s got ultimate writer ’s closure - ca n’t even get the first word of his novel typed on the reckoner . He calculate like a roofless guy and has been dumped by his get - her - clobber - together ( not in a big way ) girlfriend . Eddie is n’t too glad with himself , and in a second of satinpod admits to someone he has n’t see in a very long time that things are n’t going well in his life history .
Well this booster has just what the doctor ordered in the way of a Modern pill that allow people at access 100 % of their brain ( as oppose to 20 % , even though I ’ve always heard it stated as 10 % ) . Eddie is sceptical at first but figure he has nothing to fall back - and when he takes the tablet the results are nothing short of a revelation . It ’s like he ’s been seeing things through a murk and now a bright light is being shined on the creation around him with everything in top-notch - acuate focus . He can withdraw EVERYTHING he ’s ever date or pick up like a shot and process it as needed .
The scenery in which this first happens is done very well , with director Neil Burger ( The Illusionist ) efficaciously cast us in Eddie ’s post not only have the disclosure of what ’s happening but the outgrowth of him redact everything together on the fly , smoothly and seamlessly . Burger does a lot of interesting poppycock in the film - some might call it gimmicky . The creative ocular effects combined with Bradley Cooper ’s voice over had me thinking a lot about David Fincher’sFight Club . This picture is n’t anywhere close to that as far as deepness of quality and story - but it felt like …. " Fight ClubLite . " And I do n’t mean that in a negative way .
We get to go along for the exhilarate ride for a while , but before long things get ugly and it becomes clear that other hoi polloi not only know about this drug , but will block at nothing to get it . Eddie plug a finite supply and commences transform his life on turbo tutelage . As you may conceive of , in addition to the fact there are others who need the drug , the benefits do n’t come without a down side .
The motion picture rest almost completely on the shoulder of Bradley Cooper and his charm , and he manages to do the job fairly well . He ’s so cordial and good looking that you ca n’t facilitate but cut the bozo falling off when he ’s on screen . On the other side of the spectrum we have Robert DeNiro being Robert DeNiro ( I love when he does that ) . In a small sustain role we also haveAndrew Howardas a Russian gangster not to be messed with , and his character and performance are also one of the more pleasurable things about the celluloid .
Limitlessisn’t deep , but it has a passably chic handwriting that moves along nicely write by Leslie Dixon ( Mrs. Doubtfire , Pay it Forward , The Thomas Crowne Affair ) . The screenplay is free-base on a novel by Alan Glynn , with which I ’m completely unfamiliar - so I have no estimation how much it might have diverged from the source cloth .
This is more of a popcorn movie than I had expected - I went in hoping for something with a bit more substance and perhaps comment and result regarding the use of a fantasy drug that many of us would probably not ferment down , but while there was surface grade tending paid to that , it did n’t really grasp into it . The close was a bit glib but kind of expect free-base on the tone , but not unsatisfactory .
I was really pull between a 3.5 and a 4 out of 5 … I settled on the former because while the film was guileful and moderately satisfying , it leave me need something " meatier " throughout the wake . In the last I ’d say if you go check this out in the hopes of being entertained that it will do the job for you .
