Granik ’s achievements behind the television camera on her 2010 feature have been partially overshadowed since then by the fact that it placed Jennifer Lawrence on the path to superstardom . Nevertheless , Granik ’s poetic naturalism gave the dramatic thriller much of its flavor and her storytelling method serve her counter to the American wildness every bit well . Ben Foster stars inLeave No Traceas Will , a traumatise military veteran who lives in a internal forest near Portland , Oregon , with his thirteen year onetime girl Tom ( Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie ) . The approach extend to the way thatLeave No Tracedocuments the minutiae of Tom and Will ’s day to day life , whether they ’re cooking mushroom-shaped cloud in the timber or ( in Tom ’s case ) learning how to gently present and care for cony . For a movie that deals with PTSD , homelessness , and how the American societal anatomical structure can be badly - equip to treat these issues , Leave No Traceis sometimes remarkable in the way it avoids being melodramatic and/or manipulative in its examination of these conditions .
Foster and McKenzie certainly deserve their own fair share of the acknowledgment forLeave No Trace ’s understated glide slope . As praiseworthily restrained asLeave No Traceis , that also makes it unmanageable to commend to everyone . It ’s a film that favors mood over patch and , as such , will understandably be a small too slow and/or soft - spoken for some moviegoers ' tastes . likewise , there ’s an argument to be made thatLeave No Traceis excellent on its own terms , yet falls slightly short when it come to advancing Granik ’s sense of workmanship and the themes that she explores as a fabricator . To be cleared though , these are airfoil - level problems that have more to do with explaining whyLeave No Traceprobably wo n’t have the cultural impact thatWinter ’s Bonedid back when it arrived on the aspect .
At the same time , however , Leave No Traceshould by and large meets the arithmetic mean that buff of Granik ’s previous work will have , despite the foresighted wait between films . It ’s a lovingly shot and acted movie that ’s worth checking out on the big blind , particularly for those who are in need of a palate cleanser now that we ’ve just made it past the mid - agency point of the summer movie time of year .
