Judas and the Black Messiah , a film that follows the result that lead up to Hampton ’s blackwash in 1969 , is brought to life by director Shaka King , who also co - wrote the screenplay with Will Berson ( with a story by Kenneth and Keith Lucas ) . While the film has unbelievably potent minute that showcase the galvanizing allure of Hampton and his radical activism , the choice to see his lifetime through the crystalline lens of Bill O’Neal , the Judas of the narration , weakens the overall strength of the motion-picture show . Judas and the Black Messiahcan be incredibly gripping at times , but the narration downplays both Hampton and O’Neal ’s history to its detriment .

Unfortunately , it never feel like the story gets out of its own way enough to flourish , nor does it research the complexity demand to emphasize and humanise the characters in the way that it should .
