House Of The Dragon Season 2 Begins With Classic GOT Table-Setting… And Some Big Moments

Things are already starting to move quickly

A lot of what ’s in the first couple ofHouse of the Dragonseason 2episodes is moderately much what you ’d expect . Similar toGame of Thrones ' coming , it ’s about getting the pieces back in place , and prepare up the board for the chess motility to start out . There are plenty of small council scenes , conversation in dimly light up elbow room , and lineament starting to scheme and plot .

It ’s not reinvent ( or breaking ) the rack and not all interactions are equal , but it ’s mostly very well done . The good share ofGame of Throneswere often conversations between two characters . I do n’t thinkHouse of the Dragonhasquitethe same width of case who can live up to that , but with the right 1 , it does achieve it .

… Despite the truncated episode numeration ( only eight instead of 10 ) , I do n’t think anyone needs to worry too much about this repeating the pacing job ofGame of Thronesseason 8 .

There are , a little more surprisingly , some bigger moments in those open episodes , which is n’t somethingGame of Thronestypically did in its first few seasons ( outside of Joffrey Baratheon ’s death ) , of line . However , despite the truncated instalment count ( only eight instead of 10 ) , I do n’t think anyone need to worry too much about this repeating the tempo trouble ofGame of Thronesseason 8 . The rate gradually increase across the first four episodes and there ’s a undecomposed understanding of how the war is playing out and why determination are being made , meaning the buildup makes a lot of signified .

House Of The Dragon Season 2’s Cast Is Great - With Two Clear Standouts

Emma D’Arcy & Tom Glynn-Carney are the highlights of episodes 1-4

House of the Dragon ’s castwas uniformly great in season 1 , but one fear I did have coming into time of year 2 was how the absence of Paddy Considine ’s King Viserys might impact things . He give , for me , the best performance in time of year 1 , and one that rivaled the good inGame of Thronestoo . And while he has two candidates sample to fill his stool , he ’s not easy to replace .

Fire & Blood explores the emanation and fall of the Targaryen . Here is how every master House of the Dragon character break down consort to Westerosi history .

perhaps I should n’t be too surprised that Considine ’s dear switch is … well , Viserys ' replacement , Tom Glynn - Carney ’s King Aegon II . The thespian seem of late in time of year 1 and , while he was good , there were n’t many shade to Aegon . That changes in season 2 , where he gets to showcase a hatful more range . Like Viserys , he provides the show with much - needed bodily fluid and levity , but there ’s also a substantial tragedy to the character , and you could feel how his part weigh heavily upon him . It ’s a terrific performance , andI was offend by how much I care Aegon in the first four episode .

Emma D’Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen and Tom Glynn-Carney as Aegon in House of the Dragon season 2

Rhaenyra begins the time of year mourning the loss of her Logos , Lucerys , and you really get to feel all of her raw hurting , grief , and wrath …

The other standout is , less shockingly , Emma D’Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen . Already great in time of year 1 , they take matter to raw heights this year . Rhaenyra lead off the time of year mourn the deprivation of her son , Lucerys , and you really get to find all of her raw pain , heartbreak , and ira , while at the same fourth dimension watching as she tries to maintain it together and make the right birdsong as a ruler . It ’s a phenomenally nuanced performance that line up a rattling balance between emotion and restraint , and dead deserves to be in accolade arguing when the metre comes .

Some Parts Of House Of The Dragon Season 2 May Divide Audiences

The show makes some surprising choices, for better and worse

For the most part , I think anyone who likedHouse of the Dragonseason 1 should be very much on board with season 2 , but there are some … let ’s say interesting narrative and fibre choices , which book reader , in particular , may not harmonise with . It ’s unmanageable to get too into the weeds of these without spoilers , butthere were definitely some changes fromFire & Bloodthat I did n’t ask — some of which work out , some of which did n’t .

This is true of any version , of course , but in particular when turning an in - universe historic history into a TV show with characters who need to feel like bread and butter , breathing citizenry with a lot more detail and astuteness . I get why most of the changes were made ( and season 1 had plenty too ) . There are some changes that add new layers to characters and a much greater common sense of intrigue to their arcs , while others lose a bit of impact ( one moment I was particularly hype for left me cold ) , and some will just be purely divisive .

When The Dance Of The Dragons Begins, It’s Truly Epic

House of the Dragon delivers dragon spectacle that rivals Game of Thrones

The Targaryen civil war is calledThe Dance of the Dragonsfor a reason , andHouse of the Dragonseason 2 does begin to survive up to that name . Some of the bigger battles will get along later down the line — time of year 3 should have a lot , based on the book — and time of year 2 does pull a match of narrative illusion that experience a bit like earlyGame of Thronesin getting around fights , but it ’s all to keep its pulverisation dry for when the Dance does truly explode .

Between Game of Thrones , House of the Dragon , and the lore from George R.R. Martin ’s books , these dragons stand out as the full-grown to rove Westeros .

Again , without getting into spoilery district , I ’ll just say thatthe spectacle here , in term of dragon action specifically , rivals anything inGame of Thrones . From the beginning , I ’ve really appreciated howHouse of the Dragonmakes its flying lizard all feel distinguishable ( something I never quite felt its harbinger achieve ) , but there ’s a true brilliance to seeing them unleashed . A couple of scenes made me puff , others really captivate the revulsion of war ( and abyssal power of firedrake ) that is at the heart of George R.R. Martin ’s world , and Vhagar , in particular , stay a terrifying prospect .

If it can build on that impulse , then bury Team Green or Team Black - we ’ll all be winners .

Ultimately , midway throughHouse of the Dragonseason 2 , I ’m happy with what I ’ve see and excited for where things will go . I was a short more uncertain after the first two episode , which are a bit more mismatched and where I have bigger complaints , but episodes 3 and 4 are superb , and have some of my favorite moments of the show so far . If it can build on that impulse , then forget Team Green or Team Black — we ’ll all be winners .

House of the Dragon time of year 2 will lead off Sunday , June 16 , at 9 autopsy ET on HBO and Max . The 2nd time of year comprise of eight episodes , and is rate telly - MA for sex and nudeness , violence and gore , profanity , and vivid scenes .
