Hit and Run
If you’re a fan of any of the leads - or a pop-cult enthusiast who follows Shepard and Bell offscreen - this movie will deliver the charm.
InHit & Run , material - life couple Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell play onscreen pair Charlie Bronson and Annie . Charlie is a self - named fellow member of the witness protection program , hiding out in a small rural townsfolk where he enjoys a unproblematic aliveness of love , and days spent worry over his clownish handler , Randy ( Tom Arnold ) . Charlie ’s happy world begins to crack when Annie is offered a job develop her own curriculum at a university in Los Angeles - the home of Charlie ’s vicious past , and a lot of regretful people who want to get even with him .
Trying to prove his dear , Charlie dusts off his defective boy muscle car and outdo Annie for a high - speed run to her LA job interview . But when Annie ’s envious ex - boyfriend Gil ( Michael Rosenbaum ) tries to countermine the happy exodus , he inadvertently brings down all the wrong sort of heat on the situation . Before long , Charlie and Annie ’s road stumble is a eminent - f number pursuit , complete with shootout , buried treasure , and … a dune buggy .
Hit & Runwas write and co - channelise by Shepard ; the other half of that directorial team is David Palmer , Shepard ’s ally and collaborator ( the two made another indie comedy calledBrother ’s Justice ) . Much of the cast is also made up of names the lead actors have worked with before , and/or call Quaker ; in that sense , Hit & Runhas a passably tight - crumple atmosphere , with plenty of alchemy between the players onscreen . On the other hand , a sight ofHit & Rundepends on your reaction to figure a real - life couple get soppy while playing around with their friends - and as the very first scene clearly establishes , that ’s the character of " play " this flick is going to offer .
For their parts , Bell and Shepard are a cunning distich , with cute chemistry , and are pleasant enough to see . They actually manage to represent like substantial multitude in a real human relationship , and much of the dialogue and romantic humor in Shepard ’s screenplay is humorously existent and relatable . ( Of course , at times the dialogue could ’ve used an infusion of melodrama : naturalistic conversation does n’t always make for an interesting movie . ) There are some large comedic moment ( usually the grubby one ) , while in other instances , the slapstick strong-arm drollery or one - dimensional caricatures do n’t ferment that well at all . As a whole , the picture show is a second uneven in this way .
With the lead couple and view - to - shot dialogue both getting passing grades , it ’s easier to forgive some of the lacking areas of the film , such as the inexperienced direction and slight plot of ground onward motion . Arnold Palmer and Shepard are distinctly still developing their techniques process behind the television camera - and while electrostatic scenes in the photographic film are fine , activity setting require a lot of moving camera oeuvre are pretty mundane . Arnold Daniel Palmer ( a former music telecasting and commercial music director ) present some trouble in making the modulation to take , as many of the vehicular Salmon Portland Chase sequences look more like the short - variety data formatting he ’s experienced in , rather than something you ’d require to see in activity celluloid . The Fast and the Furiousthis picture is not .
The progression and development of the screenplay also express inexperience . After a substantial enough opening setup , our protagonist hit the route , where the meandering and random coincidences begin to drag out thing down . The primary coil through argument ( Annie ’s job consultation deadline in LA ) gets all tangled up in the character arc ( Annie and Charlie having to confront and deal with the world of Charlie ’s past tense ) to the point that somewhere in the midsection , it is fairly unclear where motivations lie . fortuitously , when such head start to arise , another subaltern character / plot - yarn arrive to push things along to the next stop along the road . The story barely work , but it works .
Tom Arnold goes overboard as Charlie ’s gun trigger - happy ( more like trigger - slapdash ) handler , Randy ; Bradley Cooper dons blonde dreads to toy a vengeance - seeking accomplice who has one of the odder criminal temperament I ’ve seen ; Shepard’sParenthoodco - star Joy Bryant plays the inexplicably blistering lady friend who is also part of Charlie ’s former gang ( for whatever reason);Smallvillealum Michael Rosenbaum plays the caricature of the jealous ex - young man with such aplomb it ’s voiceless to hate him ( wanton to hate his graphic symbol , though ) ; while other famous faces bulge up here and there in cameo that are either uproarious and sensitive ( Kristin Chenoweth and David Koechner ) , or awkwardly out of place ( Beau Bridges ) .
' Gang ’s all here ' acquaintance - films likeOcean ’s 12can be risky proposition , butHit & Runmanages to ward off being the speculative of the bunch . As an military action clowning , it ’s a somewhat good time ; though whether it ’s a goodenoughtime for theater tag toll is highly problematic . If you ’re a fan of any of the star - or a pop - fad enthusiast who accompany Shepard and Bell offscreen - this film will deliver the appeal . For more hard-core devotee of the genre , this will more likely be a " hit it and forget it , " experience .
Hit & Runis now play in theaters . It is Rated universal gas constant for pervasive nomenclature including sexual reference point , graphic ( older ) nudity , some fierceness and drug content .
