A disappointing mess. The script and direction are sub-par, and you could open a fish market with all the red herrings in the story.

I do n’t think anyone can deny that Robert DeNiro is a very gifted worker , but give the unbelievable missteps in his career over the retiring few class ( Godsend , City by the Sea , The Score ) , it seems like his life history is headed towards the same downward volute as Harrison Ford ’s career . ( Random Hearts , anyone ? ) The latest instance isHide and try . Robert DeNiro and Dakota Fanning do admirable playacting jobs with the material they are reach , but even they ca n’t save the film from a dirty script and abominably overblown focus . It is almost all devoid of scares and suspense , unless you weigh the superfluity of pedestrian " startle scare . "

The credentials of the masses behind the scene do n’t on the button inspire authority . Director John Polson is an Aussie actor whose biggest directing task prior to this one wasSwimfan . Writer Ari Schlossberg is a relative newbie ; his only previous written material reference onIMDBis a share narrative credit for a movie calledLucky 13 . And in both their vitrine , their inexperience sticks out like a sore thumb . Schlossberg ’s script is light on scares and suspense , with plot factor that go down mostly flat . I kept receive the impression that he want to write a script that would put him in the same conference as M. Night Shyamalan , but he did n’t even hail close . Besides , after seeingThe Village , I ’m not sure if aim to be Shyamalan is such a good matter .

Far worse than Schlossberg ’s lousy script , however , is John Polson ’s terrible charge . Quite honestly , it has been a while since I saw a movie direct this poorly . The news report is full of red herrings , some of which can be attributed to the script , but many of them are courtesy of Polson ’s directing . More on that a small later …

I have live in a few small town throughout my living , and I do n’t remember my realtor and the sheriff being on hand to let me in the house , but I suppose in Woodland , that ’s received procedure . At this point , Polson ’s weak direction really begin to show . Every soul in that townspeople ( and I meaneveryperson ) now starts to make out across as ominous . First , it ’s the sheriff , who is not quite as friendly as David think . Then there ’s his realtor , Mr. Haskins , whom David finds pinch outside his household at two o’clock in the daybreak . Then there are his neighbors , who seem like they ’re about ready to go off the thick close . And what ’s the significance of all these minatory people ? Well , Emily has developed some serious societal problems , and she will only commit in an imaginary ally nominate Charlie . At first David does n’t recollect anything of it , but then he start to find some parts of the house vandalized . He scolds Emily for doing that , but she assert it was Charlie . Before long , Emily is blaming Charlie for things that are far worse than malicious mischief . At that point , the audience is drive to enquire whether Emily could do all that on her own , or if Charlie might be a real individual after all .

With everyone portrayed as sinister , the theme is that Charlie could be anybody . He could even be a figment of Emily ’s imaginativeness . There are several obvious ploy throughout the story to make you think you have uncovered the mystery of Charlie , but they exist only to drag the movie out even longer . There were at least two endings that I suppose were ending , but the film kept going and going and go and going and …

I wo n’t defy give away the conclusion , just in eccentric you are a glutton for penalization and want to see this crapfest for yourself , but do n’t expect anything striking . You might have fun view how long it takes you to fancy out the ending ahead of prison term , or if you could think the termination . ( I did n’t think the finish right ; I inquire what that says about my intelligence level . ) Overall , this motion picture was a disappointing good deal . Here we have yet another movie starring Dakota fan that I did n’t wish . lease ’s hope her role in the upcomingWar of the Worldswill start to repeal that trend . She ’s a very safe actress , and she deserves better material than this .
