The account follows a young male child make T.J. ( Devin Brochu ) who has recently lost his female parent in a tragic auto fortuity . unluckily for T.J. , ( or luckily , depending on how you look at it ) , the half - build house he stones is also the impermanent dwelling of " Hesher " ( Joseph Gordon - Levitt ) a burnout metal - head complete with a rusted van as his trusty steed . Hesher take none too kindly to T.J. pull in the local regime with his Harlan Fiske Stone - throwing tantrum ; the knotty burnout evidence up on T.J. ’s grandma ’s doorsill claiming nester ’s right , threaten T.J. ’s family if the youthful boy does n’t play along . On the other hand , Gordon - Levitt ’s endowment as an actor makes Hesher a throughly piquant reference to hit the books and watch , if not empathise with or tie in to . Though a lot of the timeHesherfeels as aimless , tiresome and unmotivated as , well , an real hesher , there are some standout moments in the film .
