This time around , he ’s teamed up with Jonas Alexander Arnby ( When Animals Dream ) for an ambitious feature with expansive thought that does n’t know how to execute them all well enough to make them make common sense . Even with a nuanced performance from Coster - Waldau and beautiful motion-picture photography , Exit Planis a dim - burn mark dramatic play that fizzles out in the closing .

Exit Plan (2019) - Poster - Nikolaj Coster-Waladau

It ’s during this time that   a guest of his , who ’s been trying to   forecast out how her husband died , make out to him with an reply . From a video recording sent to her , she ’s able to hound her husband ’s decease back to a distant hotel , coin the Hotel Aurora , which specializes in assisted felo-de-se . Max sees this as a two - razz - one - stone situation and decides to check it out for both her and himself . Unfortunately , this tightlipped location is far more sinister than its remote outside or pamphlets would have anyone believe , prompting him to interview   his decision to go and if he ’ll ever be able to leave .

If this plot of ground sound heavy , it ’s because it very much is . unluckily , it does n’t really take the fourth dimension to   research these cryptical existential aspects of the human experience . But rather , it becomes more focussed on the hotel ’s many creepy   features by the remainder , curve   down to a very unsatisfying   conclusion that prompts more doubtfulness than answer . The playscript , write by Rasmus Birch , starts off strong ,   center on an individual who ’s call into question life itself and how   it affects those he cares about most . More than midway through , though , it starts to veer off into completely dissimilar territorial dominion , flex this drama into more of a suspense thriller , with the latter feeling unnecessarily shoehorn in at the last fifteen minutes .

The story is also told in a non - linear fashion that takes its time unknot . That is n’t necessarily a bad thing , but for those who are n’t patient enough to wait through the expounding , it may be quick to plow some viewers away . On the other hand , though , Coster - Waldau genuinely reflect in this role . His performance is powerfully elusive , really relishing in the many emotion that Max feels on a day-to-day groundwork . This is peculiarly evident in his interactions with Lærke . Their love is so inviolable , and it ’s the one thing that celebrate him from wanting to end it all . He really elevates the story and remains dedicated up until its very last moment .

Exit Planalso boasts beautiful filming by Niels Thastum along with an excellent grade from Mikkel Hess that effortlessly bounces between moments of levity and dread . Even frequent Yorgos Lanthimos henchman , Yorgos Mavropsaridis ( who was put up for an Academy Awards for his work onThe Favourite ) , did a phenomenal job editing the celluloid . regrettably , the story often feels as if it ’s on a wagon train to nowhere , with the cease feeling confusing and queerly put together . Considering it started off with an interesting premiss that could have explored so many dissimilar existential avenues , it   chooses to end in such a way that it does n’t really solve any questions leftover in a satisfactory way .   However , if you ’re a die - arduous Coster - Waldau fan , this slow - burn could be well deserving the delay .
