Dominique Tipper Discusses Dustborn
The Actress Delves Into Her Character & Gaming History
Screen Rant : First , Dominique , I would have a go at it to just learn about what drew you to this role of Pax in the first place ? What about her character really appealed to you the most ?
Dominique Tipper : Well , firstly , I do it the concept of the plot . I think this choice - based , feeling - based sort of game was really coolheaded , nothing I ’d really fall across before ; I ’m not a massive gamer , but just even from try out with games and other game I ’ve done . To play Pax , she ’s such a cool - almostwritten in the means that I care my fictional character to be when I ’m on - screen , just very grey-haired , very flawed , a real multifaceted human being . I also wish the political aspect of the plot , of the world it ’s set in . I just thought it was all very cool . That ’s believably what delineate me to it .
You ’ve acted in picture game before , as you mentioned , but I ’m rum what it ’s been like for you to take on a larger voice performing use in a game as the genius protagonist , and the unequalled challenges that come with that compare to acting on screen like you unremarkably do .
Dominique Tipper : That ’s a good question . It was great doing this . It was gruelling work , because depending on the pick you make , you get a dissimilar Pax . There ’s a few unlike versions of her , depending on how you respond or the things you say , so for each scene , we had to do unlike edition for that aspect of the text .
I do n’t know , it ’s unearthly - you almost feel like you have to do more because your face is n’t on - screen . It ’s very well-heeled to get an emotion or something across with a facial expression or a change in a facial locution , you do n’t have that luxury with vocalization acting . I think what was knockout for me was dial it up , which I always issue forth across that with video game . I ’m like , " Oh , is that too much ? " And it ’s like , " No , that ’s thoroughgoing because it ’s not your face . " I always reckon dialing up is the intemperate thing , but it was very cool to play the confidential information of this secret plan . I really enjoyed it . Also , the singing aspect of it , because they ’re clandestine as a band , so I had to memorialise Sung dynasty for the secret plan , which I ’ve never done before , which was very cool .
In general , can you talk a minuscule bit more about what the recording procedure was like ? Were you recording with your atomic number 27 - stars in the same place ever , or was it all put down separately ?
Dominique Tipper : No , I never enter with my co - hotshot once really . All of it was separate . It was just me and Ragnar [ Tørnquist ] and the sound engine driver , and I would have to imagine their responses or do a few versions of it so that when they edit it they could equalise it with what the other mortal was doing .
I ’ve only met Safiyya Ingar , who plays Sai , because we went to do PAX East together , but old to that and post that , I have n’t take on any of the other voice actors . You do it all alone really , because there is so much to get through per actor , so I mean if we were all in the room together , it ’d just be a incubus . I get why they do it , but yeah , it was just me on my own .
You mentioned doing multiple takes , and obviously I get into a good deal of that is just differing livery , but was there ever any advertizement - libbing in the kiosk at all ?

Dominique Tipper : Did I ad lib ? No , I do n’t think I did ever . specially when Pax is fighting , her calibre of how she speak during the fights is quite bantery , she is always s***-talking everyone . A lot of that , that was all written , soI think that feel ad - Willard Frank Libby , but it was n’t me ad libbing , it was me doing playscript . I ’ve possibly done some ad libs when I was singing , but not for the textual matter , not for the scene portions .
Have you bring forth a hazard to play a fortune ofDustbornyourself yet ?
Dominique Tipper : Not yet . I got to play a piddling bit of it at PAX East , which was fun , but I do n’t actually have a console , so I do n’t be intimate , I might want to discover a acquaintance that ’s got a console so I can play it , but yeah , I have n’t .
You note you ’re not much of a gamer in your free clock time , but I ’m curious if you ’ve ever ventured into that realm at all , even when you were younger ?
Dominique tip truck : Yes . When I was younger I used to play . I was - nobody called it a gamer then , you know ? I ’m probably showing my age , but not when I was a kidskin . I was always playing game . My grandparent had an Atari , so I start up on an Atari , and then retiring that I had a Sega Mega Drive , and I loved that .
I also used to toy a lot on the PC . I played all these weird games , like Doom - early Doom - I used to play that a lot , which used to freak me out , but I still used to bring it anyway . Then there was this strategy plot called Dr. Hugo , and you ’d have to find out who kill someone , and it was so weird . Then on the Mega Drive , I loved Fantastic Dizzy , which is another platform scheme game , and Abe ’s Oddysee , I used to spiel that .
But I was very dynamic in many different activity from a kidskin , so I think once I started cheerleading , dancing , telling , I stop over gaming , because I was out after school all the time . I was a cross - country admirer as well , so I start up to be out , and then I started rave . That was the conclusion of gaming .
Do you find this character has perchance imbibe you back into that world a fiddling routine and lure you to think like , " Maybe I will get a pair of game , " or anything like that ?
Dominique Tipper : I do have it off acting game , you know . I just do n’t set aside time for it . I recently was play It Takes Two with a admirer .
I love that plot .
Dominique Tipper : So good ! But it ’s just not something - now I ’ll probably paint , or write , or translate in my unornamented time , or take a dance class . If I ’m sitting down in front of the TV , I ’ll watch a show or a film . But perchance I should - I ’ve not really thought about it . Maybe I could set out with Dustborn .
Yeah , it ’d be a great jump off point , although it might be weird to hear yourself in the game .
Dominique Tipper : I know . Be meet like that [ miming using a controller with an uncomfortable expression ] the whole time . [ Laughs ]
You mention paint in your innocent time , I had no idea that you were into that .
Dominique Tipper : I do n’t believe I ’m anything to compose home about , but I set off in 2020 , actually . I bought an easel and some canvas then . Just something originative , an supernumerary creative thing to do and pretend that I ’m really right at it .
Has the visual style of this secret plan inspired you at all in your own art ?
Dominique Tipper : No , I ’m not that good . I ’m just splashing some key on . I wish I could be as respectable as the artistic creation in Dustborn . Who knows , perhaps I ’ll take a few notes out of the secret plan ’s book and try .
Dominique Tipper Talks Onscreen Roles & The Future
BTS Moments Of The Expanse, Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters' Season Two, & More
dislodge to your on - screen work a little bit , I ’m just so curious - and if you ca n’t reveal anything , that ’s all fine - but if fan might get to see a little bit more of an expansion of yourMonarchcharacter next time of year .
Dominique Tipper : I do n’t know if I ’m take into account to say , actually . No - I am . Yes , I am , because Chris Black , the Almighty , he mentioned it at the upfront , so yes : you will see more of Brenda Holland .
I have it away you have to speak in very broad terms , but what are you most excited for fan to see in your character this season ?
Dominique Tipper : I do n’t really know what her storyline is entirely just yet , butI hope we get to see a muckle more different incline of her value-system and her morality . But again , I do n’t in reality have a go at it , so this is just my own wishes for the grapheme . Because I think we ’ve seen one side of her , and she ’s the main opposer in a way , so I ’m concerned to see what else we get to see from her in time of year 2 , and how that then contrasts with the lead characters , or if it does n’t .
I fuck gray area . I recall that ’s always what makes characters great , when you ’re just like , " Oh , I kind of agree with her on this point , but not that one . " More of that , really , and more fabulous outfits , because I think it ’s the first prison term I ’ve have on heels on screen .
Really ?
Dominique Tipper : Yeah . Can you believe that ? So it ’s courteous to enclothe up and be mythical and muck around around in heels . It ’s fun after the year of overalls . [ Laughs ]
Of the characters that you ’ve played both in games and on concealment , which one do you feel like you relate to the most ?
Dominique Tipper : Oh , that ’s a difficult interrogative sentence , because there ’s something about acting where for play your characters well , you ca n’t judge them . A big part of playing work is empathy and compassion , I think , in terms of you just have to translate why the somebody you ’re playing is doing what they ’re doing . It ’s severe because I in reality relate to all of them in that mode . I do n’t necessarily always match with everything they ’re doing , but I always have to , I guess , to act a eccentric well , realize why they ’re doing what they ’re doing , what their motivating is , so I often colligate to scene of them all .
I do n’t know if that ’s a bit of a w***y answer , but even with Naomi in The Expanse , there ’s so many metre where I was like , " Yep , I would ’ve done the same thing , I get it , " and then time when I was like , " Oh no , why are we doing this ? " It ’s really heavy to do that question actually , because even though I was like , " Why are we doing this ? " I still read it from her position , so I do n’t eff how to answer that .
In all of your motion-picture photography ofThe Expanse , are there any moments that really stick out to you , either the scenes that ended up on the CRT screen , or behind - the - panorama moments of that show ?
Dominique dump truck : I have so many beautiful behind - the - scenes moments of that show , because I love all of them so much . We all receive on so well . There ’s many bibulous nights in Toronto that I could tell you about .
I think time of year 5 really changed me as an actress in terms of what I knew I was up to of , pushing myself to limits that I just did n’t know I could get to really , even with that character - it really challenged me . I detect it really hard , but at the same time , quite rewarding in term of being quite surprised by my own oeuvre in a mode . That one vex out for me , because I ’m really proud of the study we ’ve done on that season and that I get the chance to get to that part of her story .
I think it ’s so awful and heartbreaking , and I got a bunch of feedback from citizenry who ca n’t be with their kid about how it affected them , and that really dissemble me , so I think that really stick out . But behind the scene , just every twenty-four hour period , that show was a delight to shoot even when it was hard . It was amazing , and the masses on it , including the crew , were amazing , so I would n’t even know where to pop with that .
shift back to your part of Pax and the plot as a whole , I know you have n’t had a chance to actually encounter it much , but you do know plot wise a tidy sum of things that happen and that sort of affair . What are you most mad to see player react to when it comes to your character ? evidently without any huge spoilers .
Dominique Tipper : Well , I suppose all the undercover band material is really funny , and - I think I ’m allow to say this - but it ask on a Guitar Hero component , so I ’m concerned to see how the great unwashed will react to that . But also as we go through the game , there ’s one surgical incision where we confront Pax ’s past and where she comes from and her home , so I really get laid that bit of the biz , and I love what happens when they ’re there . I think that ’s a really nerveless part .
Then there ’s a genuine ghostlike , philosophical component to it towards the end . I ’m interested to see how people respond to that . Because I thought that was really -it was a left I did n’t see the game taking , and I thought that was really cool , so that as well . I ’m also interested to see how the great unwashed react to the political scape of the game , given what ’s presently going on in the mankind .
Do you have any other exciting labor in the pipeline that you ’re reserve to talk about at all ?
Dominique dumper : Not at the instant , no . Monarch is the next matter , I ’m doing time of year 2 . That will take up quite a lot of my class , so that ’s kind of it for now .
Dustbornwill release for PlayStation consoles , Xbox cabinet , and microcomputer via Steam on August 20 . A 30 - minute demonstration is now available on Steam until June 30 .
