Defense Grid 2 , a column - defense plot first released in 2014 , has now landed on the Nintendo Switch , and the resolution is of mixed tone .   It ’s easy to advocate the game at its $ 19.99 price point in time - its multiplayer features , legion levels , and challenge modes   ensure plenty of replayability , and   its magnetic core gameplay is quite enjoyable .   Plus , the   game also include theDG2 : Aftermathexpansion , which was previously undivided to VR versions of the deed .   But it ’s tough to shake the feeling thatDefense Grid 2is a game more at plate in 2014 than in   2019 . Its   car-mechanic are at times simplistic and at others opaque ,   resulting in an uneven experience that blow some of the   straight pleasure it offers .

In the game , thespian assume the part of the commander , who works with a mathematical group of AIs to combat an incursive alien threat .   Aliens breed in wave and march down a predetermined itinerary toward the player ’s power cores , which serve as lives . count on the horizontal surface , tower can be ramp up around the track ( not stymy exotic movement ) , along it ( allowing players to make mazes for the aliens to operate through ) , or both . player can also fit   special power , such as a detrimental eruption and a boost to the destructive capabilities of a tower cluster , that facilitate out in tricky situations .

Tower defence flourish on tower variety , andDefense Grid 2 ’s is underwhelming . Players unlock all of the tower after a fistful of levels , and then step by step unlock customization options for them - like damage - over - time and slowing attack - but those unlockables are rarely exciting . They just make the towers   stronger , pass on the gameplay for the most part unchanged . The game suffers from similarly dissatisfactory level aim . Although there are some standout stages ,   many are clean generic and dull . And as   level   grow in size ,   they sometimes gain multiple enemy spawn tip , which can make predicting where the aliens will go a bit puzzling . That confusion   can palpate like an unreal extract of difficulty : The biz becomes hard not because the actor must think more critically about their strategy , but because they ’re disoriented .

Luckily , Defense Grid 2includes some welcome quality - of - life features . Holding down the left-hand shoulder push button restarts the previous round , so players can go back as far as they need to even up any mistake they make . There ’s also a fast - forward option that turn the longer ,   perhaps inert level of 30 or 35 unit of ammunition into more frantic   bouts . Unfortunately , players have little reason to opt for unconstipated speed instead of rapid fire , because the strategic differences between round can be hard to detect . There are various types of aliens - some have shields , some regenerate life when not being damaged , some mend the aliens around them , etc . - but they all bleed together , compromising the strategical potential difference inherent in the game . It ’s possible , for example , to beat the narrative mode on the nonremittal difficulty position without totally understanding how the aliens ' stealth mechanic works .

As far as bugs go , in the grade of   the play - through for this review , the game crashed once ; and , on multiple occasions , hark back to the chief menu after finish a degree left the level marked as incomplete . But despite its flaws , Defense Grid 2is ultimately a rather sorcerous game . As the story modality progresses , the Bradypus tridactylus supporting the histrion discuss the mind - washing that ’s affect   a few   of them , and the voice   acting by   Jennifer Hale , Jim Ward , Alan Tudyk , and the rest period of the cast   is compelling . It ’s a shame that dialogue often convey place in the   middle of levels , couch it second to the rush to build and upgrade tower . But this is a tower defense , and rare will be   the instrumentalist who comes to it for its narrative . Defense Grid 2 , then , is a winner , albeit not a perfect one : a fun if simple biz that scratches the itch it sets out to fulfill .
