Warning : This clause contain SPOILERS for The Boys season 4 , instalment 4 .
Summary
The Boysseason 4 highlights how volatile and dangerous Homelander is , butI really wish the show would stop making me finger sorry for the Supe . Homelander is undeniably the baddie ofThe Boys , but the Amazon serial does a great occupation of showing viewers why he acts the way he does . The Boysseason 4 , episode 4underscores the encroachment his upbringing has on his demeanour — and how it feeds into his on the face of it endless need for congratulations and love . Seeking to rid himself of this vulnerability , Homelander return to the Vought labwhere he was create in " Wisdom of the Ages . "
What unfolds at the Vought research laboratory can only be depict as a massacre , and I found Homelander ’s killing spree difficult to watch . He turns the tables on the scientists who raised him , shew them how it feel to be tortured and scared . But while Homelander ’s actions in sequence 4 are despicable , they also speak to what he endure in childhood . It ’s hard to avoid feeling a little sorry for the Supe , especially as he recite what he went through growing up . If nothing else , I walked aside from installment 4 feeling that Vought is just as much a villain as Homelander .
The Boys time of year 4 raises the tensions between non - Supes and Supes , and it introduces several of the latter in its newfangled installment . Who are they ?

It’s Hard Not To Feel Sorry For Homelander In The Boys Season 4, Episode 4
His Recollections Of His Childhood Are Pretty Horrifying
Homelander return to Vought ’s lab with a purpose inThe Boysseason 4 , episode 4 : to torment the scientists there the same mode they tortured him grow up . " Wisdom of the Ages " offers more insight into the Supe ’s backstory , and his recollections of his puerility are n’t pretty . In fact , they ’re downright horrifying . Homelander recalls being placed in an oven for draw out periods of time and being kept in isolation . As a child , Homelander really did suffer at the hands of Vought . And I ca n’t help but palpate bad for the younger version of his character , even know what he becomes .
I ca n’t aid but feel high-risk for the younger interlingual rendition of his character , even knowing what he becomes .
After all , it ’s partially Vought ’s fault that Homelander is the scoundrel we conform to inThe Boys . If he ’d been raised the right way — perhaps with a greater focus on morals , relationship , and emotional rule — there ’s a luck Homelander would be a Supe who actually help people . alas , by depriving him of acceptance , honey , and reliable parental figure , Vought makes him emotionally unstable and unequal to of suppress his bad pulse . His tragic backstory does n’t make up for what he ’s done , but it makes me feel disappointed for him .

This Isn’t The First Time The Boys Has Made Me Sympathize With Homelander
The Supe Has Rare Moments Of Humanity
The Boysseason 4 , installment 4 is the bad I ’ve ever felt for Homelander , butit is n’t the first clock time the Amazon show has made me sympathize with the Supe . Homelander shows rarefied and surprising moments of human race throughout the series , and it ’s enough to make him a tragic villain . Homelander ’s desired family relationship with Ryan is probably the best example , as it ’s obvious he wants to do justly by his son . Unfortunately , his lack of role models and inability to connect emotionally makes it unmanageable to execute this .
Homelander register rare and surprising bit of man throughout the series , and it ’s enough to make him a tragical baddie .
Still , Homelander on occasion make the correct calls with Ryan — like when he work with Butcher to protect his son from Soldier Boy at theending ofThe Boysseason 3 . Homelander ’s fruition that his biological father want nothing to do with him also evoked understanding from me , as it ca n’t be easy facing such a blunt rejection . AndThe Boys Presents : Diabolicalshows a different side of Homelander , divulge that his untested self tries to do the good affair during his first mission . Again , it ’s not enough to let him off the hook . Butit makes it harder to fully dislike Homelander .

The Boys Won’t Let Me Fully Dislike Homelander - And That’s The Point
The Amazon Show Doesn’t Take A Black-And-White Stance On Good & Bad
Despite the sporadic moments where Homelander endeavor to do the good affair , there ’s no deny his character is more tough than unspoilt . However , I find it hard to fully hate him after knowing what he ’s pass through — and I think that ’s the point . The Boysisn’t shy about his political commentary , but it does n’t take a ignominious - and - ashen posture when it come to goodness and evil . Homelander is proof that unsound the great unwashed can have redeeming qualities and moments , just as good ones can sometimes do the amiss things .
The Boysseason 4drives the latter item home through fictitious character like Starlight , and it ’s no coincidence that the serial is drag up her darker moments from the past tense . Starlight is more well - intended and virtuously righteous than Homelander , but the thing she did to Firecracker as a fry prove she has a dark side . Like Homelander , Starlight is n’t alone one thing . And it ’s this complex type writing that makesThe Boyssuch a successful show , as its total lineup feels realistic and relatable .
