Dead Man Down
Dead Man Down is a strange beast of a crime-thriller-drama, best described as something like 21 Grams meets Donnie Brasco - with a Die Hard finale thrown in for good measure.
InDead Man DownColin Farrell play Victor , the member of a crimson crime syndicate whose boss , Alphonse ( Terrence Howard ) , is being targeted by an strange aggressor hell - bent on picking the mob apart . Little do Alphonse and gang know , it is Victor himself who is do havoc from within their very ranks - as revenge for a great evilness done to the former engineer and his family .
Everything is going according to well - orchestrated design , until Victor meets Beatrice ( Noomi Rapace ) , a fellow scarred and solitary soul from the next building who decides to make a connection . Victor speedily learns that Beatrice has dark running much deeply under her pelt than he initially thought , and their family relationship complicates an already delicate secret plan of chess , in which one wrong move results in stemma being spilt on the streets .
Directed by Niels Arden Oplev , the man behind the original Swedish rendering ofThe girlfriend with the Dragon Tattoo(which made an international star out of Noomi Rapace),Dead Man Downis a strange animal of a crime - thriller - play , well described as something like21 GramsmeetsDonnieBrasco- with aDie Hardfinale give in for adept measuring rod . The event is not quite a great moving-picture show - but thanks to strong central eccentric and calibre role player playing them , we do get an interesting and fairly estimable type B - moving picture experience .
exchangeable to ( but not equal to ) Martin Scorsese , Oplev is a director who is able infuse the mobster movie submarine - genre with some high - art cinematic flare . There are many visually striking moments and sequences throughout the moving-picture show - as well as a level of mise - en - scene and iconography that is almost poetical in its carrying into action ( see : Victor and Beatrice ’s first " meeting " ) . These moments - primarily see in and around the romantic wedge - plot of ground - are a stark direct contrast to the more nonrational action bit , which are plotted out with a clever mathematical preciseness .
The same ' left mentality , right mental capacity ' ( cycle ? ) ( dichotomy ? ) can be seen in the hand by J.H. Wyman . In many waysDead Man Downcarries the same impression of writing style - intermingle oddity that can be see in Wyman ’s most noted feature article - film handwriting , The Mexican . Like that moving-picture show , however , Dead Man Downalso has moment where it feel like impulse and machination are suddenly being sidelined in party favour of stage turn - style lineament dialogues and development . Luckily forDead Man Down , the actors playing the primal roles are skilled enough to make these ( at times peculiarly theatrical ) case worthy of look out .
Farrell does straight - faced saturation well enough , and he makes Victor a guy who is complex and intriguing enough ( in few tidings ) that trace him along his sorry odyssey is easy to do . Brief scenes detailing Victor ’s erstwhile biography are Testament to how rounded and dispatch the character really is - so seeing him struggle with questions of morality , obligation and compassion feel organic and relevant , unlike so many other ready-made occupy on the same fabric .
Rapace is the major standout as Beatrice - a former beautician whose life was shattered by a car chance event . There ’s considerable complexity to the character ; in fact , the first half - minute getting to know her is a like ask a roller - coaster ride of perception , there are some many twists and turn . When the account has finally settled in , however , Rapace commands attention and pulls off Beatrice ’s electric arc both attractively and all … before she unluckily gets lost in the shamble of a somewhat silly third act ( but more on that later ) .
Terrence Howard and Dominic Cooper ( Captain America ) are their usual scene - stealing self ; Howard chews scene with a rodomontade swagger as Alphonse , while Cooper seems to be headlining a moving picture all in his head play " Darcy , " a noble ass-kisser and Victor ’s near " friend " in the ring - who also happens to be the one cat push nigher and nearer to finding out Victor ’s secret . French actress Isabelle Huppert makes off with the few scenes she ’s in , playing Beatrice ’s loving mother , and a few other familiar faces like F. Murray Abraham and Armand Assante cameo as various members of the Scheol .
While two - thirds of the film are a sluggish - burn fiber piece / cat - and - mouse thriller , the final act blow into a full - on , Die Hard - style action fest . The sudden fracture is very cumbersome ; it stretches the limit on suspension of disbelief , and compromises a act of case and plot of land - point cautiously produce up to that level - but the big last set piece is still entertain on a gross action / spectacle layer . The ending of the plastic film is , too , a somewhat reductive and cliched closure to many of the more interesting themes and fiber bow explored along the manner , but deliver enough of a take that the mean flick fan will probably be satisfied .
Colin Farrell in ‘Dead Man Down’
In the end , Dead Man Downis two - third of a moving-picture show for the arthouse / indie crowd with a third remnant for the mindless activity - lover . As a result , this unknown beast fall somewhere in the eye of things in term of quality - but for fan of the cast members or those who love revenge thriller that are n’t afraid to explore the more complicated composition of vengeance , there ’s something here to see .
