Warning : spoiler for Justice Society of America # 10
Summary
The hero of the 31st one C are back - but they ’re not the famed ones . As Geoff Johns ' and Mikel Janín’sJustice Society of Americabarrels towards a sexual climax , the whole DC Universe is at wager , and it ’s possible theLegion of Substitute Heroeswill be the one to save up the day .
In a prevue forJustice Society of America#10 by Johns and Janín , the much anticipated return of some less - than - heroical champion is glimpsed . The Golden Age Legionnaire has just been unveil as none other than a unseasoned Mordru , the prospicient - time baddie of the Legion of Super - Heroes , and his message is elementary : both the thirty-first century and the present tense are in grave risk . And so the Legion of Substitute Heroes stumble back into the DCU , as scattered as ever , as they argue among themselves regarding the ensuing time state of war .
In his stylemark ( but off - brand ) Superman - esque lawsuit , Animal Lad , whose great power is the ability to plough humankind into fauna , plead with his fellow torpedo - wedge to not get involved in such a large - plate event . After all , the lot of the universe is n’t a Book of Job for those who have been deemed " useless . "
Despite being rooted in the Golden Age of DC Comics , the Justice Society is one of the more unnoted DC squad . Why is the JLA above them ?
Who Are the Legion of Substitute Heroes?
Are They Connected to the Legion of Super-Heroes?
The Legion of Substitute Heroes made their first appearance inAdventure Comics#306 by Edmond Hamilton , John Forte , and Joe Letterese , wherethe strange squad are seen as the cull of the 31st century . They are the super work bench - heater , the single called when the all - wiz get a knee injury . With powers not mainstream enough to grant them first appearance intothe more popular Legion of Super - Heroes , they band together to create a type B - List roster , though their reputation is just as sub - par .
In the current Dawn of DC continuity , the leaders of this team are a tag end - ticket Wizard of Oz crew : a cowardly lion , a pit human race , an empty - lead nature - lover , and a woman on a witch - hunt — not to cite a hero who can breathe fire , like a genus Circus performer . Though Fire Lad is not alone in his ostensibly random major power .
These Legionnaire Rejects Have Some Strange Superpowers

Compared to heroes like the Flash , the other leaders of this " Sub - Legion"have some unfortunately ( and sometimes disgusting ) major power . Rainbow Girl , for example , by being tune into the emotional spectrum , also tends to track down her own stratagem of emotions at varying times . Chlorophyll Kid very just has a unripe thumb and arrogate a telepathic association to all industrial plant life history , much like Poison Ivy , though nobody really believes him . And finally , Stone Boy ’s claim to renown is that he can metamorphose his body into stone — which means if an immobile statue is needed in a engagement , he ’ll get call first .
The Legion of Super - Heroes is far from being the world ’s finest either , since they claim the notoriously useless Bouncing Boy .
Yet , the very oddness of this subaltern Legion ’s superpower is what make them so endearing , and their return is welcome in this brighter , ever - stranger DCU . There are only so many stories of too - substantial heroes before it gets repetitive . What theJustice Society of Americaneeds now , being too - warm Cuban sandwich themselves , is a small funding to save the universe . TheLegion of Substitute Heroesaren’t the best of the unspoiled , but they are next in line and ready for action .
