Collateral

Slow paced with spurts of intensity that will suck you in due to the excellent acting by Cruise and Foxx make Collateral a must-see.

I have not yet read any reviews ofCollateralso you ’re receive this fresh , without any subconscious influence concern what others are read , and I ’ll say this : Collateralhas … weight .

By that I do n’t mean that it ’s heavy , but that it feel like it has substance , it draws your attention . Sure , that ’s what a movie is supposed to do ( dramas , anyway ) but how many times have you sat through a flick that feel more like the Cliffs Notes version of a movie ? Kind of like " Movie - Lite " ? That ’s certainly not the fount here .

The film opens with the Dreamworks and Paramount logos in blackened and white , with the gap setting of the movie fool extremely grainy , but in color . I do n’t really see the reason for that … maybe someone smarter than me has it in their review . In any suit Vincent , our grey - hairy assassin ( Tom Cruise ) bumps into an strange ( to us ) person ( Jason Stathom who you may recognize from the recent filmThe Transporter ) . They by choice switch suitcases and part ways . I had really trust that Stathom would turn up in the movie later , but that ’s the last we see of him .

You probably roll in the hay the canonical fib by now : Max the cabdriver ( Jamie Foxx ) is unlucky enough to pick up Vincent the pay up assassin , who bechance to have a number of jobs to do one nighttime and want Max to be the chauffer for the eve .

Before picking up Vincent , Max pick up extremely attractive customer Annie ( Jada Pinkett Smith ) as a fare , and they have time to connect during the drive . She ’s a prosecutor and he ’s a cabbie with plans to open up his own limo business . Max turns out to be intuitive and soft - spoken , and by the end of the ride there ’s a connective there .

Cut to Vincent almost not getting in Max ’s cab while Max daydreams about Annie . Even though I knew what was to hail , some part of me was hoping that Vincent wouldnotget in Max ’s cab , but of line he does . Vincent decease himself off as a substantial estate investor who needs to get papers signed by five clients all across town that night and offers Max double what he would unremarkably make for a full night ’s piece of work .

Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx In Collateral

thing get ugly right off the squash racquet as the first assassination does not quite go according to architectural plan and Max finds out about it ( to say the least ! ) . Vincent ’s thought was that Max would never know , but it does n’t phase him : he " adapts , evolves " and keeps the situation in hand . So from there it ’s all about Max not wanting to be a political party to this yet not being able to get away , all the while trying to figure out how to give up Vincent .

I can see why Cruise chose to do this film : Vincent is not a caricatured " spoiled bozo " . Sure , he ’s a psychopath , but he has second where he show he ’s got a tiny bit of world left when he helps out Max on more than one function . He also has his own personal Nietzschean ism which he seems to be eager to deal . His point of view is very defeatist , yet pragmatic , and he actually bring some nirvana to Max , although not in the manner he intended . Cruise ’s Vincent is really quite personable until he starts fill you with smoke gob . He slip into the role quite well , and I never for a import thought " Hey , that ’s Tom Cruise , he ’s hypothecate to be thegoodguy " .

Foxx was also effective as a mellowed guy who just does n’t want any fuss , but who is pushed further and further and is unforced to maltreat beyond his personality when he sees that the state of affairs isnotgoing to get better any time soon . He ’s certainly come a farseeing way fromIn Living Color , and he ’s much more credible in a serious role than say , Jim Carrey , who in dividing line seems to ooze sincerity to the point that it does n’t look sincere .

Jamie Foxx driving a cab in Collateral

Directed by Michael Mann, the crime thriller Collateral features Tom Cruise as a hitman hired to take out witnesses before a big trial and Jamie Foxx as the cab driver who unwittingly becomes his accomplice. With Jada Pinkett Smith, Mark Ruffalo, and Javier Bardem in its cast, the 2004 film received critical acclaim for its direction, performances, and suspenseful plot.

The movie worked well , give us time to get to know the characters with extended scenes , rather of cutting back and away in a jerky manner to point things happening simultaenously . There is more than one way to show that , and it was done well here , so props to the editor . However if you ’re an adrenaline junkie who walks out of a movie thinking it was feeble because the music was n’t blaring and the movie was n’t a two hour farseeing activeness succession , you might be let down .

Michael Mann has done well once again , and seems to be on the short list of systematically good directors . The flick probably could have turn a loss about 3 or 4 min about 3/4 of the way through to pluck up the tempo , but beyond that , it is a great film .
