It ’s dramatic and uncomfortably relevant to mod times despite direct place almost a century ago and while it wo n’t make you jump out of your rump often , it ’s a scary look at the impression of state of war and the ghosts , both veridical and imagined , that stalk the public consciousness .
Brooklyn 45begins just enough — four friends ( and one better half ) who know each other during the war unite during Christmas to support their grieving friend , Lt . Col . Clive Hockstatter ( Larry Fessenden ) , whose wife , Susan , just died by suicide six calendar week earlier . By the time his friends arrive in the other evening , he is already properly intoxicated . Former inquisitor Marla Sheridan ( Anne Ramsay ) is perhaps the most sympathetic , even if her married man , Pentagon pencil baby buggy Bob , is uncomfortable around all this emotion . So , too , are Mjrs . Archibald Stanton ( Jeremy Holm ) and Paul DiFranco ( Ezra Buzzington ) . What get as a normal gathering , though , is shortly revealed to be something else — Clive wants to talk to his married woman from beyond the grave by conducting a séance and while everyone puts on their game face , things quickly go very wrong .
One ofBrooklyn 45 ’s biggest strengths is its biz mold . Ramsay and Buzzington partake a crackle dynamic as tensions flare in the aftermath of the initial séance , with the latter devising for a formidable baddie bod . Buzzington ’s Paul is a war man through and through , wearing his raiment and his toxic nationalism proudly on his articulatio humeri . Marla is the most reasonable of the bunch , desperately seek to defuse a situation that threatens to spiral out of controller at any second . Despite the fact that Marla was just as involved in the war as her friends , there is a screw thread of misogynism that underscores every interaction she has with Paul , Archibald , and Clive as they doubt the toll that her interrogation , aka torture , has had on her psyche .
ThatBrooklyn 45is interested in these kinds of kinetics is what makes the film stand out . What could ’ve been run - of - the - milling machinery genre fare becomes something more nuanced ( and much more emotional ) as it looks at the way of life wartime paranoia translates to everyday violence and how nationalism is a slippery incline to xenophobia and homophobia . Its twist , which come at a rapid charge per unit early on and then slow up down onceBrooklyn 45gets to the meat of thing , only tally to the sense of chaos that stretch . To give away any here would ruin much of what makesBrooklyn 45a fantastic ride , but Geoghegan ’s committal to writing is convinced enough that it does n’t only swear on these wrench for shock ingredient .
Ultimately , Brooklyn 45is not a full-strength - up scary movie , nor is it a wartime drama . Like the in effect horror , it incur a comfortable median that is both a speculation on the effects of wartime trauma and a bloody musical style film , going from ghost tale to paranoia - laden legend with discreetness . Its slim runtime does n’t always allow for a deep dive into its many concerns , but it ’s enough to see the underlying heart of the project . The cast ’s chemistry really sell what transpires here and without that , it ’s hard to see the flick working . fortuitously , Brooklyn 45 ’s disparate firearm come together to make for a wholly unique film that feels rarefied to come across these day .
