Bright

Bright is a muddled mess of a film that fails to produce any fresh concepts or creative ideas by mashing together two distinctly different genres.

Brightis a illusion meets cop drama / thriller written by Max Landis and train by David Ayer ( ending of Watch , Suicide Squad ) . Since   Landis broke out as a screenwriter with   the 2012 found footage hitChronicle , he has made a habit of meld genre elements   in his screenplays ; see , for example , his   stoner romance meetsBourne - expressive style bravo thrillerAmerican Ultra . Landis’Brightscript follows suit in that obedience and was supposedly tailor made for Ayer - something that is n’t hard to believe , yield how it   allows the filmmaker to continue his on-going exploration of Los Angeles gang culture and the contrast between cops and criminal . Unfortunately , much   of the   potential that this   meeting of minds had ends   up consume here . Brightis a muddled mess hall of a film that fail to produce any fresh concepts or originative ideas by mashing together two distinctly different literary genre .

Will Smith asterisk inBrightas Darryl Ward , a seasoned LA copper who lives   in an substitute version of the modernistic   world where humans and mythical   animate being - including , Orcs , Elves , and Fairies , among other airstream - have coexisted for thousands of years . With only five years provide until he ’s eligible for his pension , Ward discover himself   partnered with rookie pig Nick Jacoby ( Joel Edgerton ) - who also happens to be the first Orc   constabulary officer ever . Although the bulk   of the ( human ) LA police military group would choose to see Jacoby kicked out purely for being a non - human , Ward does his best to cooperate with his Orc   partner , even after Jacoby commits a cub fault that well-nigh   gets Ward kill .

However , what start out out as a routine Nox patrol for Ward and Jacoby speedily extend south when the twain trip upon   the gruesome aftermath of a criminal offence scene downtown . There , the two get wind a magic wand - an ancient artefact that has fallen into caption and can only be wielded   by individuals know as Brights ( as anyone else who plunk up a scepter barehanded will explode ) - along with a mysterious pixie named Tikka ( Lucy Fry ) .   The three shortly find themselves on the run and doing their best to protect the wand while staying alive , with everyone   on their tail from   soiled cops to power athirst human being ( as well as Orc ) gangsters - and most unsafe of all , an elf nominate Leilah ( Noomi Rapace ) , who wants to use the wand for her own sinister   purposes .

In some   room , Brightplays out like a re - imagining of the sci - fi buddy cop filmAlien res publica , only withDungeons and Dragonsfantasy races instead of extraterrestrials . Problem is , the mismatched police policeman report at the substance ofBrightis very thin sketched and derivative to a fault , the fact that one of the copper is an Orc aside . The antic   MacGuffin that drives the action forwards is n’t all that interesting either , nor are any of the   plot twirl and turns that Landis ' script tosses into the mix all that   surprising or compelling . Brighthas some winner with its earthly concern - building efforts in the beginning , but by the death its background   does n’t feel all that cohesively realized and would still be a bit undeveloped by the touchstone of a TV pilot . As for the film ’s attempts to tackle subjects like racism and police force ferociousness through illusion parable - they ’re   conventional at near , but more often than not come off as   ill-conceived and more than a little   dubious .

Smith and Edgerton do their best to lift the material that they are demo with here ,   but for the most part their characters never come across as anything but two - dimensional pilot . While Smith lends   his trademark wise - cracking and dramatic bearing to the photographic film , Brightnever evolves   Ward beyond being the distinctive hard - edged police police officer who ’s been on the problem for too foresighted . Jacoby ’s arc is likewise not all that compelling , nor is the motion-picture show consistent in the way that it shows the eccentric   adjusting to the impost of mundane human life . At the closing of the day , Ward and Jacoby are n’t memorable as a mismatched cop duet , beyond the fact that one of them is a creature out   of a J.R.R. Tolkien - enliven fantasy floor .

The supporting drop inBrightis ( sadly ) by and declamatory waste here too . Fry as Tikka has few to no distinct character traits ( or talks ) and the connexion that she take form with Ward and Jacoby rings emotionally hollow for it . Rapace as the villainous Leilah is given   an as small amount to do here - and not much to say either - beyond making malign expressions and belt down the great unwashed in gruesome ways . Smith’sSuicide Squadcostars Ike Barinholtz and Jay Hernandez spiel humble supporting character here too , as   do   actors like   Édgar Ramírez ( The Girl on the Train ) and comedian / performer Margaret Cho , but their characters seem to exist to ram the plot of land frontward and are pay little to nothing to do beyond that .

To his credit , Ayer keepsBrightmoving along at a unfluctuating gait and avoids dawdling too long on the film ’s many unconnected plot beat and   half - bake ideas . Ayer and his believe   cinematographer Roman Vasyanov also pull off to create some prominent visuals , convey the picture ’s fantasy version of LA to liveliness through sullen shadows and sharp nighttime colors . At the same sentence , there are several illustration where the   movie ’s world feel small   rather than expansive and alive , as though it was film mostly at nighttime as a cost - cutting measure . Bright ’s action sequences conk out to leave alone a good impression either and tend to rely too hard on murkily lit closeup that are confusingly and clumsily edited together . Clearly , the melodic theme was forBrightto combine the looking   of a granular pig movie with phantasy spectacle , but the movie struggles to seamlessly mix these aesthetics together .

In the end , Brighthas more in unwashed with one of Ayer ’s directorial   misfires ( likeSabotage ) than one of his best efforts , a laEnd of WatchandFury . There ’s certainly the potential to do something more interesting with the phantasy world that Landis and Ayer have established here , should Netflix adjudicate tomove forwards withBright 2 , as   reportedly planned . The problem withBrightcome down to the pathetic implementation and lack of followthrough , more than anything else . Here ’s to hope that Netflix ’s next seek to create an original movie that can go toe - to - toe with the average big - budget Hollywood offering turns out ( much ) better .
