Battle: Los Angeles

Screen Rant ’s Vic Holtreman reviewsBattle : Los Angeles

Battle : Los Angeles(or if you ’re into the " texting " translation , Battle : LA )   was # 4 on our2011 Most Anticipated Movieslist - and as we ’ve made clear before , just because we have a lot ofanticipationfor a movie does n’t mean we know it ’s become to begreat .

WellBattle : LAisn’t great - but for a March action moving picture I ’d call it at least good .

Battle Los Angeles Movie Poster

This film brings us yet another alien invasion narration , with vista we ’ve seen before in picture show in this genre - and others as well . Reminiscent ofIndependence Day , the story revolves around just a couple of day of event - the day leading up to the invasion and the day of . We ’re introduced to the marines who we will spend time with throughout most of the film one by one in a well meaning but clunky endeavour at audience " insta - bail . " As the film goes on you sort of get attached to a duet of them , but with most , not .

We ’re shortly enclose to Staff Sgt . Nantz ( Aaron Eckhart ) , a career marine who ’s getting up there in days but is still a bozo who is in the field or else of behind a desk . He ’s on his mode out when what seems to be a meteor shower strike the Earth , but ends up being ( of course ) an alien encroachment . Things storm up cursorily and the military is called into activeness to evacuate the coastal area of Los Angeles , as the new arrivals waste no time prove that they do NOT add up in pacification . Our team of marines is tasked with evacuating any civilian that may still be located in Santa Monica , which will be bombed all the path to the coast in an crusade to decimate the alien priming coat forces . Once they get into the area , the trick is getting out alive .

If that sound faintly   evocative ofBlack Hawk Down , rest assured that is not the only similarity . Battle : Los Angelesis shot in an plain room - the intent being to make it seem like we ’re on the background with these forces and it ’s toy completely serious - you wo n’t regain any of the variety of body fluid that was inIndependence Daydespite the law of similarity to that film . This is gift as a realistic war motion picture , albeit where the foe lend an unreal quality .

Aaron Eckhart in Battle Los Angeles review

Along withBlack Hawk Down , there are scene remindful ofDistrict 9 , Aliensand I ’m sure you could pick out a few other motion-picture show as well . And I ’m here to assure you , if you HATE trembling cam - this is NOT the film for you . It is used to excess here right from the start . A very canonical scene that engage position in an office with Nantz talking to another officer had so much tv camera movement that I thought maybe the cameraman had some sort of muscular ascendance problem . Compounding this is the constant use of uttermost facial close - ups , which made me wish I had sat a few rows further back .

Where the movie excels is during the battle sequences that are quite intense and really put you in the midst of thing . Where it does not , is when it seek to bring the ( apparently obligatory ) little personal moments between character . It ’s very clumsy and oh so clichéd almost every time - except for one scene in the third bit where I would say the accomplishment of Eckhart comport the simple but in effect dialog and a scene between him and another marine actually packs an excited puncher .

While there are some weak performances , Aaron Eckhart does an admirable job as does Michelle Rodriguez for the short amount of clip she has on the sieve . A couple of the supporting role drew me in as well , despite not have much clip to do so with so many player vying for television camera time .

An invasion scene from Battle: LA

After aliens start a surprise invasion on Earth, Ssgt. Michael Nantz leads a group of marines that is the last line of defense for the planet. Battle: Los Angeles stars Aaron Eckhart as Nantz alongside Michelle Rodriguez, Bridget Moynahan, Michael Peña, and Ne-Yo. Upon release in 2011, Battle: LA got largely negative reviews from critics.

Another thing that I found quite gratifying ( and I may get logical argument on this , although I do n’t know why ) is the portraiture of the U.S. armed forces in particular and America in general . It harkens back to old war movie - you know , the ones where the soldier were actually portrayed as Heron instead of scoundrel or mentally damage masses . There were a couple of battle scene were I ’m not humiliated to say that I felt a rush of superbia at seeing the actions of the case on the CRT screen in conflict and in the protection of civilians .

DirectorJonathan Liebesmandidn’t have the good script to piece of work with here ( byChristopher Bertolini ) - unwieldy dialogue and not really what you would call a complex history , not even by a long shot . But fall in some decent cloth to work out with , I face forrard to seeing what he does in the time to come ( he ’s directing theClash of the Titanssequel ) . As far as this film goes , I do advocate see it on the big screen because in accession to the battle aspect , it has some pretty impressive sound design that is worth experiencing in a theater .

I ’m think that while the film is not the greatest affair ever , suffers from uber - shivering Cam River , runs too long and is getting a drubbing by critics , that audiences will enjoy the " feel good " portraiture of the military and maybe find out some catharsis in seeing them conflict easily identifiable , no - grey - area villains .
