Screen Rant reviewsAstro Boy
I get going intoAstro Boywith high-pitched hopes and nostalgia . I ’m actually old enough to remember watching the original cartoon back when I was a small fry , and being a sci - fi kind of eccentric even as a weensy child , think back enjoying the futuristic show about a robot son who could wing and had all kinds of cool weapon . trailer and cartridge clip look good so although I expected a kids ' plastic film , I was looking forward to this and add along my 13 year old daughter and a protagonist of hers .
All three of us were of the same opinion : It was a waste of an hour and a one-half .
There will be some spoilers in this followup , but as it ’s a movie aimed at kids , and I ’m write this brushup for parent , I go for you wo n’t bear in mind .
I swung 180 grade in my notion between the sentence the opening credit began and ended - at first the animation and dramatic medicine draw me in right off the squash racket and it looked like we might be in for something expert . But then I started seeing the names of the part actors … one well - known name after another , after another . Kristen Bell , Nicolas Cage , Samuel L. Jackson , Charlize Theron , Donald Sutherland , Nathan Lane , and more . Do I have anything against any of these doer ? Not at all . So what was the problem ?
More often than not when there is an revive picture with a hotshot - studded cast it ’s a very honorable indication that you ’re in for a very fair movie .
Do n’t ask me WHY this so - it just is ( in my experience ) .
AsAstro Boybegins we are treated to a fast animated sequence showing how humanity has ruin the planet and we abridge to what could be a video commercial for move to Metro City - a urban center literally in the clouds , where everyone is well-chosen and golem do all the study people do n’t require to do ( including , interestingly enough " Nanny - bot " ) . They indicate that all is not rosy because while they swim above the earth they just dump their trash and old robots over the edge to catch on down to terra firma . Oh , and people actually live on the ground , scrabbling amongst what looks like a Brobdingnagian garbage dump / junkyard .
The valet who made this lifespan of leisure time possible via his robotic innovation is Dr. Tenma ( Nicolas Cage ) , the father of Toby , a boy of about 13 ( ? ) who seems to be on his mode to being as brilliant as his don . It seems that a meteorite fall to Earth and had at its core an energy author that could help restore the planet to its once pristine state - trouble is that to do that it had to be part into " honest " vigour and " regretful . " Bill Nigh plays a scientist who of course of study want to use the estimable down in the mouth push to bring about , well , safe . But President Stone ( Donald Sutherland ) wants the cherry-red energy put to use to create a super - weapon golem that he can expend to go to warfare with the airfoil dwellers .
In a demonstration of the golem ( where thing go horribly wrong ) Toby is kill by the malefic robot . Heck of a direction to start a moving picture aimed at kids … Anyway , Tenma is stricken with grief , take up a chain of hair from Toby and apply its deoxyribonucleic acid and the disconsolate energy to create Astro Boy in an effort to still have his son . While Astro Boy is 90 % Toby , he is different enough that Tenma shuns him . Astro Boy end up on the surface , and is befriend by the fry go there , oversee by the apparently benign robot fanatic scientist " Ham Egg " ( Nathan Lane ) .
finally Astro Boy makes it back up to Metro City to fight with a giant translation of a red - energy - power robot / President Stone and preserve the Clarence Shepard Day Jr. .
For younger tike ( I ’d say maybe 6 - 7 and under ) the final battle is pretty intense as the giant robot tries its effective to kill Astro Boy ( and seemingly succeeds ) . Also the death conniption early on is a bit much - pretty hard core for a PG movie in my opinion . Throughout the film there were ( to me ) many annoying references to " starting a war to get re - elect " and an idiotic quote by the President:“Look at history , negative energy always wins . “Really ? Last fourth dimension I checked the Nazis lost World War II . But the dress hat for me was a stage set up up for the President to mouth at a political rally with a banner behind the pulpit that stated"Now is not the time for modification . "
Seriously ? In a kidskin ' film ? I remember when movies for kids hand out moral message , not political ones .
I did enjoy the life inAstro Boyquite a bit , but then like I say , I ’m a fan of the original character and he was portrayed well and voiced just okay by Freddie Highmore plus I ’m just a fan of CGI animated moving-picture show in general . There were also three goofy supporting characters that were quite funny , but I think my daughter ’s friend summed it up best : The good thing about the end of the movie is that it meant it was over .
